Abhishek Sharma has emerged as one of the most dangerous T20 batters thanks to his exceptional timing and ability to hit the ball all around the ground. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson highlighted his unique style, emphasizing how Abhishek’s power doesn’t come from brute force but from precise timing.
“He has got a great bat swing and is a natural timer of the ball,” Williamson told ESPNcricinfo. “He has got that gift of power but it’s not through brute force. It is through timing the ball and playing all around the ground, which is a superpower in a lot of ways.”
Abhishek Sharma: Breakout IPL 2024 Performance
Abhishek had a stellar IPL 2024 season, scoring 484 runs in 16 innings at a remarkable strike rate 204.21. His explosive partnership with Travis Head at the top order made SRH a formidable team. Following his IPL success, Abhishek continued his momentum in international cricket, scoring two centuries in T20Is with a strike rate of 193.84 after 17 matches.
Abhishek Sharma’s Journey in the IPL
Williamson recalled Abhishek’s early days at SRH after being traded from Delhi Capitals in 2019. Despite playing only three IPL matches before that, his potential was evident.
“There were a few guys who were kind of under Yuvraj Singh’s wings. Abhi was one of them and Shubman [Gill] was another. So clearly there was an identification of talent,” said Kane Williamson.
“Though young players often struggle for consistent opportunities in the IPL, SRH’s decision to back Abhishek has paid off. A real masterstroke obviously now bearing fruit with Abhi being one of the most dangerous T20 batters in the world,” Williamson added.
Kane Williamson’s First Impression of Abhishek
Williamson described Abhishek as a confident and energetic youngster who loved taking on challenges.
“He was a really jovial character, sort of happy-go-lucky who took the game on. A lot of confidence as well that you do see in some of these young kind of superstar-type mould players,” Williamson said.
Abhishek’s intense training sessions and fearless hitting made him stand out. “A keen trainer, he would come in and whack and lose as many balls by hitting them as far as he could,” Williamson recalled.
A Future in Test Cricket?
Despite being seen as a T20 specialist, Williamson believes Abhishek has the potential to adapt his game to Test cricket.
“Clearly a strength of his is striking the ball, which lends itself to white-ball cricket, but I still think he has a very good technique as well. I’m sure he has aspirations to play Test cricket for India, which is often the ultimate achievement,” said Kane Williamson.
Williamson praised Abhishek’s ability to read the game and adjust his shots accordingly.
“He has just got so many dimensions to his game, which comes with that little bit of maturity. He has always had the natural bat swing and the ball-striking [ability], that youthful exuberance. But to channel that and hit the ball to all areas, taking on the best bowlers in the world, so that takes courage as well,” he added.
With his fearless approach and growing experience, Abhishek Sharma is steadily making a name for himself as one of the most dynamic batters in modern cricket.
