Mumbai Indians maintained their perfect winning streak against Gujarat Giants in the WPL through another five-wicket victory which extended their total victories to 5 in a row. As soon as Harmanpreet Kaur chose to field, Mumbai Indians maintained dominance because most teams achieved success while batting second. Mumbai’s lineup of Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt together with Amelia Kerr secured 6 wickets to limit Gujarat Giants to 120 runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt successfully steered Mumbai toward victory by making a mature fifty as the chase ended with 23 balls left on the clock.Â
Gujarat Giants Falter in the Powerplay
Harmanpreet made the correct choice to start with fast bowling from both ends since she anticipated early support for the bowlers. Sciver-Brunt dismissed Gujarat captain Beth Mooney in the second over after Mooney hit a Sliced shot which Sanskriti Gupta caught near backward point. After Laura Wolvaardt hit the ball Shabnim Ismail placed it perfectly into the reach of S Sajana at deep cover.
The fourth over witnessed Matthews claim the dismissal of D Hemalatha as Kerr made a precise catch at deep midwicket. Sciver-Brunt tricked Gardner with a well-disguised slower delivery which resulted in the batter getting out at midwicket to Sajana.
Giants reached 28 for 4 during their powerplay scoring period which stands as their lowest total recorded in WPL history. Their strikes were so unbalanced that 26 out of 36 delivered balls turned into plain dots during their match which became the most number of dot balls during WPL competitions.
Harleen Deol Fights a Lone Battle
A continued streak of wickets did not stop Giants players from hitting attacking shots instead of protecting their positions. During her brief time at bat Dottin tried to advance against Kerr when she swung at a ball and Yastika Bhatia efficiently performed a stump.
Kashvee Gautam brought late excitement to the match when she hit two boundaries and blasted a six out of bounds over long-on against Ismail’s delivery. She became one of many Giants players who started well but could not turn her good beginning into a substantial score because she edged a ball from Matthews through to the keeper.
Harleen Deol managed a 32-run innings by performing perfect sweep shots and distribution of strike deliveries throughout her batting. The frequent wickets prevented Giants from gaining any substantial moment throughout the match. The 17th over sent Harleen Deol back to the pavilion at score 8 in 103 runs which ended any chance of a fighting-total. Through reliable batting from Sayali Satghare and Priya Mishra Gujarat completed their allotted 20 overs.

Throughout the match for Mumbai both Matthews (3-16) and Sciver-Brunt (2-22) achieved flawless four-over spells with each pitcher sending over 16 straight dot balls and Ismail succeeded in maintaining 19 dots in her allocated four-over spell.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s Commanding Knock Seals the Win
Mumbai faced no real threat when targeting 121 yet Matthews got out soon after when he tried to pull Tanuja Kanwar at square leg. Sciver-Brunt immediately secured control of the chase when she started her destructive batting performance.
Sciver-Brunt initiated the first over with an authoritative pull shot before landing subsequent strokes with great accuracy to hit open spaces without any hesitation. Dottin received an aggressive cut through the point field while Mishra got out through square leg twice in consecutive balls.

Sciver-Brunt showed no signs of panic when Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet struggled in the middle overs by forming a reliable partnership worth 45 runs during 38 deliveries alongside Kerr. She scored fifty at exactly 34 balls before leaving the field when seven more runs would have sealed victory.

Opening batter G Kamalini wasted no time during her firstvez in WPL 2025 when she smashed her opening delivery for four and Sajana finished off the game with a drive over mid-off to give Mumbai Indians their opening WPL 2025 points.
With this win, Mumbai Indians move to second place on the points table, while Gujarat Giants slip further behind with a declining net run rate.
