SA vs AUS: Aiden Markram Stands Tall With Patient 75

South Africa batter Aiden Markram fought hard against Australia’s bowling attack with a patient 75 in the fourth innings of the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban. However, Aiden Markram‘s resistance was not enough to save the hosts as Australia secured a 214-run victory and took a 1–0 lead in the three-match Test series.

Chasing a challenging target of 421 runs, South Africa needed a strong batting performance to stay alive in the contest. Aiden Markram stood firm for 237 balls, but wickets at the other end prevented the hosts from building the partnerships required to challenge Australia’s total.

Aiden Markram & Wiaan Mulder Offer Resistance

South Africa resumed the final day at 102/4, with Aiden Markram unbeaten and Wiaan Mulder alongside him. The pair focused on defending their wickets and frustrating Australia’s bowlers, knowing that losing an early wicket could end their hopes of saving the match. Their fifth-wicket partnership added 69 runs from 205 balls. Aiden Markram showed excellent patience, leaving deliveries outside off stump and waiting for scoring opportunities. Wiaan Mulder also played a supporting role, making 29 runs as the pair kept Australia waiting for a breakthrough.

However, Josh Hazlewood eventually broke the partnership by dismissing Wiaan Mulder, who edged a delivery down the leg side to wicketkeeper Alex Carey. The breakthrough came after an extended period of resistance and shifted the pressure back onto South Africa’s lower order.

Mitchell Starc Ends Aiden Markram’s Fight

Aiden Markram continued batting even as South Africa lost wickets around him. He reached 75 from 237 balls, striking nine fours in an innings built on patience rather than aggression. With the required target still far away, his main challenge was to keep Australia’s bowlers at bay and give South Africa a chance to fight for a draw.

However, Mitchell Starc ended his innings after a review confirmed the dismissal. Aiden Markram edged a delivery off his pads through to Alex Carey, becoming the ninth South African batter dismissed. His departure left the lower order with little room to extend the contest. South Africa’s resistance soon ended, as Josh Hazlewood dismissed Anrich Nortje to bowl the hosts out for 206. Australia won by 214 runs, with Josh Hazlewood finishing with figures of 6/49 in the innings.

A Brave Aiden Markram Knock Without a Winning Result

Aiden Markram’s 75 was one of South Africa’s most determined efforts in the chase. His ability to bat for 237 balls showed discipline and resilience, particularly as the Australian bowlers continued to apply pressure. However, the lack of substantial partnerships meant his innings could not change the outcome.

For Australia, the breakthrough against Wiaan Mulder and the eventual dismissal of Aiden Markram proved decisive. South Africa will look to improve their batting support in the next Test, while Australia take confidence from a strong all-round performance in Durban.
