IND vs WI: Shreyas Iyer’s Brigade Take On West Indies

After winning the three-match ODI series 2-1, India will now turn their attention towards the five-match T20I series against West Indies. Shreyas Iyer will lead India in the first T20I at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. The match starts at 7 PM IST. Shreyas Iyer and his team will look to carry their momentum into the shortest format, while West Indies will be confident after winning the third ODI in New Chandigarh. The visitors will look to start the T20I series strongly against India.

India looks to make a strong start under Shreyas Iyer

The T20I series gives India an opportunity to test several players and combinations. Shreyas Iyer has a strong squad available, with Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma among the main batting options. Abhishek Sharma will be an important player at the top of the order, while Tilak Varma provides another left-handed option in the middle order. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan give India wicketkeeping choices as well.

India also have plenty of bowling options. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi provide variety in the spin department, while Arshdeep Singh will be one of the main pace options. Mayank Yadav’s return is another major talking point. His pace could give Shreyas Iyer an important option, especially during the powerplay and death overs. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series.

West Indies bring plenty of power

West Indies have a number of dangerous T20 players in their squad. Shai Hope will captain the side and keep wickets, while Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd provide plenty of power in the batting lineup.

Kamil Pooran is another player to watch after an impressive CPL season. He scored 273 runs from eight innings at a strike rate of 160 during the tournament. West Indies also have experienced options in their bowling attack. Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie could play an important role in the middle overs against India’s strong batting lineup.

Spotlight: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

One of the biggest talking points around India’s squad is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The young batter has been included in India’s T20I squad and could get an opportunity during the series. His presence gives India another aggressive batting option and could make the competition for places even more interesting. With several established players already in the squad, it will be interesting to see whether India give the youngster an opportunity in the series.

India vs West Indies: Recent history

India have the better record against West Indies in T20I cricket. The two teams have played 31 T20Is, with India winning 20 and West Indies winning 10, while one match ended without a result. The recent meetings between the two sides have generally favoured India, but West Indies will take confidence from their victory in the third ODI. The ODI result showed that West Indies can put India under pressure. Shreyas Iyer will therefore want his side to avoid taking the visitors lightly.

Tactics for India and West Indies

India’s batting depth gives Shreyas Iyer plenty of options, but the team will need to find the right combination quickly. For West Indies, the key will be their power hitters. If players such as Hetmyer, Rutherford and Powell can attack India’s bowlers through the middle and death overs, they can put the hosts under pressure.

For Shreyas Iyer, the challenge will be to keep India’s bowling attack balanced while making the most of the team’s batting depth. The first T20I could set the tone for the five-match series. India will enter with the advantage of home conditions and a strong squad, but West Indies have enough firepower to make the opening contest competitive.
