On a flat batting paradise in Guwahati, Shubman Gill dazzled under the lights in a record chase as his second double ton powered India past a 406-run target to flatten the West Indies. Shubman Gill was the star in the evening session, but before that, West Indies had a lot to cheer about as centuries from Amir Jangoo, Shai Hope & John Campbell powered West Indies past 400 runs. Hope got his 20th ODI ton while the other two got their second ODI ton. Roston Chase finished well, with Kuldeep Yadav finishing with 2/65 in 10 overs as West Indies posted 405/7 in 50 overs.
In reply, India rode on a masterclass from captain Shubman Gill, ably supported by Rohit Sharma as the Men in Blue powered past the target in 43.3 overs. Gill scored his second double ton in ODIs while Rohit got past 200 sixes in ODIs and 12,000 ODI runs alongside his 35th ODI ton as the 255-run opening stand in 26.2 overs sealed the fate of the game. Virat Kohli scored 29 off 19 balls while Ruturaj Gaikwad got a useful 31* off 37 balls as India won with 39 balls to spare.
Amir Jangoo, Shai Hope, & Jon Campbell’s tons power West Indies to a massive 405/7 in 50 overs
Put into bat first by India once again, John Campbell and Keacy Carty came out to open the batting for West Indies while Prasidh Krishna had the ball in hand for India. Campbell was off and running as he dominated the power play and trounced the clueless Indian bowling on a flat deck. Carty also hit a few good shots. Campbell was the dominant partner throughout as the opening duo added 37 for the first wicket before Carty fell for 9 off 10 balls with 2 fours to his name to Prasidh Krishna. Captain and keeper batter Shai Hope came out to bat next.
Campbell continued his assault, and the powerplay score for the West Indies was a whopping 96/1 in 10 overs. The platform was set for a huge total. Hope got a reprieve on 15 when Kuldeep Yadav dropped a tough chance on his own bowling on 15*. Later, Virat Kohli dropped him while he was on 27*. Campbell completed his superlative second ODI ton. The duo put on an amazing 110 runs for the second wicket before Campbell fell for a magnificent 101 off 68 balls with 9 fours and 5 sixes to his name to Gurnoor Brar.
Amir Jangoo came out to bat next and, after playing himself in, played a few shots and got fluent as well. Hope rode his luck but looked like a million dollars out there in the middle. Hope was later dropped on 61* when KL Rahul put down a tough chance standing up against Kuldeep Yadav. Hope would make India pay and score a superlative 20th ODI ton. Hope and Jangoo added a game-changing 182 runs for the third wicket in 131 balls before Hope fell after his ton for 104 off 94 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes to his name against Kuldeep Yadav.
Sherfane Rutherford came out to bat next. Just one run was added to the score before Rutherford fell for a golden duck to Gurnoor Brar. Roston Chase came out to bat next. Jangoo carried on and completed his superlative ton. Jangoo and Chase added 18 runs for the 5th wicket before Jangoo fell for 114 off 77 balls with 13 fours and 3 sixes to his name to Ravindra Jadeja. Keemo Paul came out to bat next. Chase took over for the final overs as India clawed their way back in the match a little bit.
The duo of Chase and Paul added 21 runs for the 6th wicket before Paul fell for 3 off 8 balls to Kuldeep Yadav. Alzarri Joseph came out to bat next. Joseph managed to get a boundary away, while Chase also played his part and scored vital runs in the end as India gave away extras at will. Chase and Alzarri added 16 runs for the 7th wicket before Joseph fell for 8 off 10 balls with one four to his name to Ravindra Jadeja. Shamar Joseph came out to bat and got off the mark with a maximum off Jadeja.
Chase and Joseph got together with 15 balls left in the innings and added a further 20 runs to take the score beyond 400 runs. Chase remained unbeaten on 29 off 25 balls with 4 fours to his name while Shamar was unbeaten on 14 off 8 balls with one four and one six to his name as West Indies finished with a massive 405/7 in 50 overs. 23 extras were given by the Indian bowlers, which included 20 wides.
Indian bowlers went the distance, and the fielding was average, to say the least. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers yet again with figures of 2/62 in 10 overs. Ravindra Jadeja finished with 2/75 in 10 overs. Gurnoor Brar finished with 2/96 in 10 overs. Prasidh Krishna finished with 1/45 in 5 overs. Auqib Nabi finished with 0/84 in 8.5 overs. Naman Dhir finished with 0/38 in 6.1 overs. It meant that India needed a massive 406 runs to win off 50 overs to win the series 2-0 with a game to spare.
Shubman Gill’s second double ton powers India past a record chase in 43.3 overs
Chasing a massive 406 for an improbable win, Rohit Sharma and captain Shubman Gill came out to open the batting for India while Jayden Seales had the ball in hand for the West Indies. After playing themselves in on an absolute road, the Indian openers just did not look back. Rohit and Gill complemented each other really. The duo knew how to maximise the power play, and they did so. Much like the West Indies, the Indians dominated the power play.
Both the batters were matching stroke for stroke and just made a mockery of the challenge, as the West Indies had no answers, with dew coming in slowly as well. Both scored at a similar speed initially and scored 92 runs in the powerplay for the loss of 0 wickets. They were only 4 behind the West Indies total after the powerplay. Then they went berserk in the middle overs and were just unstoppable.
Till they reached their 80s, both Gill and Rohit were going at the same pace. But Gill stepped up when it mattered and got to his 11th ODI ton and second of the series. Rohit batted and supported him well and was dropped by Keacy Carty off Vitel Lawes when he was batting on 84* when the score passed 200 in the 22nd over. Rohit went on to score his 35th ODI ton and got past 12,000 runs in ODIs.
The duo decimated the West Indies bowling and made the chase of 406 a mockery as the required rate plummeted. They put on 255 for the first wicket in 26.2 overs when Rohit finally fell for 101 off 75 balls with 10 fours and 6 sixes to his name to Jayden Seales. Virat Kohli came out to bat next with 151 needed off 23.4 overs. Kohli got off the mark soon and started positively by playing his shots. His main aim was to keep the momentum going from the openers. Gill looked determined out there.
Gill converted his ton into a daddy hundred for sure. The duo of Gill and Kohli added 65 runs off 35 balls to make the chase a mere formality before Kohli fell for 29 off 19 balls with 3 fours and one six to his name to Shamar Joseph as Sherfane Rutherford pulled off a stunner in the deep by taking it inches from the ground. Ruturaj Gaikwad came out to bat next. Gaikwad played the situation sensibly as India needed less than a run a ball.
He played himself in and spent time in the middle to get a score while Gill was on fire at the other end. He suffered from cramps towards the end, which is understandable with the amount of humidity there in Guwahati, but he completed his second ODI double ton. The duo of Gill and Gaikwad made sure West Indies did not get more wickets as India cruised to the win. The Men in Blue slowed down a bit as 300 had come up inside 30 overs. But despite the slowdown, the target was achieved in 43.3 overs as 400 came up inside 43 overs as well.
Gill carried his bat as he was unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls with 26 fours and 8 sixes to his name, while Gaikwad was unbeaten on 31 off 37 balls with 2 fours to his name. 22 extras given by the West Indies team, which included 17 wides and 3 no-balls, as India reach the target of 406 in 43.3 overs, finishing with 406/2.
West Indies had an even tougher day with the ball in hand defending this score. Jayden Seales finished with 1/78 in 8 overs. Shamar Joseph finished with 1/52 in 6 overs. Alzarri Joseph finished with 0/89 in 8 overs. Keemo Paul finished with 0/49 in 3 overs. Roston Chase finished with 0/63 in 8.3 overs. Vitel Lawes finished with 0/73 in 10 overs. So, India thrash West Indies by 8 wickets with 39 balls to spare for a record run chase to clinch the series 2-0 with a game to spare. Captain Shubman Gill was awarded the Player of the Match for his stupendous double ton.

So, India have clinched the series 2-0 with a game to spare. West Indies will want to finish the ODI series with a win. They don’t know what hit them today, as even 405 was not enough. They would hope to take the positives and get a win on Saturday.
