In the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was the pick of the Indian bowlers, registering a 10-wicket haul. Manav Suthar returned exceptional figures of 6/55 in the second innings after a haul of four wickets in the first innings.
Despite all the uncertainty surrounding the Men in Blue’s red-ball cricket lately. Suthar reminded India what a classical left-arm spinner can do. Suthar became only the seventh Indian spinner to take 10 wickets in an away Test match, joining the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in an elite list.
The Story of Manav Suthar’s Method
The numbers tell one part of the story, but the method tells another. Manav Suthar bowled with control, using the wind to create drift, changing his pace without altering his action, and kept returning to the same areas. Suthar played a very old-fashioned game, keeping the pressure on and waiting for batters to slip up and make mistakes.
Manav’s approach brought about different modes of dismissal, racking up his tally to 10/131. Manav Suthar based his game on spin built on traditional foundations, where the basics were polished to a sharp edge instead of shortcuts chased.
Manav Suthar Triggers Collapse
Sri Lanka were 199/6 after lunch, aiming to pull the game to a respectable close, before Manav Suthar was reintroduced into the attack. The left-arm spinner turned the game completely on its head from thereon, dismissing Pathum Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha & Prabath Jayasuriya in the space of six balls during a chaotic 76th over.
Manav Suthar rattles Sri Lanka
Suthar crafted an innings built on precision, control, pace, bounce, and drift. Manav understood what the Lankan batters would attempt and denied it, returning India from a morning of frustration to a 1-0 lead in the series. Suthar’s return changed the game, owing not simply to a burst of turn but to a spell characterised by his signature temperament.
Though one outing does not settle India’s long-term spin plans. Suthar has proved that there is a young spinner capable of bowling long spells, holding his line, and letting the conditions work for him. Suthar has reminded India of the impact of a classical spinner.
