It’s time for a mid-table clash in WTC 2025-27 as visitors India, placed 5th in the table, clash with the hosts Sri Lanka, placed 6th in the table, in a 2-match Test series starting on India’s Independence Day, i.e. 15th August, 2026. The series opener commences at the picturesque Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle. The second Test is slated to take place at the SSC in Colombo from 23rd August, 2026 onwards—a crucial series for both teams to keep their hopes alive.
India will be led by Shubman Gill while Dhananjaya de Silva will lead Sri Lanka. Both teams have their own injury problems in their own way. But they are brave and grappling with it and will leave no stone unturned in putting their best foot forward. Pitch and conditions will be key, so will the weather at this time of the year. The stage is set for an interesting contest.

So, the stage is set for the first Test of this 2-match series as India, sitting in 5th place in the points table, will face off against the host nation Sri Lanka, placed in 6th place at the picturesque Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle. Although in terms of games, India have played more than Sri Lanka in this cycle, they still have to do well in this series to keep the pressure on the teams above them.
India so far has played 3 series in the WTC cycle 2025-27 and in 9 games they won 4, lost 4 and drew 1 game. India started their campaign with a thrilling 2-2 draw against England in England. They then beat the West Indies at home 2-0 before going down to reigning WTC champions South Africa 2-0 in a two-match series. India now have a 2-match series in Sri Lanka this August before going to New Zealand for a 2-match series in November 2026, before taking on Australia at home in Jan-February 2027 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 5-match series.
India will be led by talismanic player Shubman Gill with KL Rahul acting as his deputy. India will be without Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan due to injuries, while Washington Sundar is ruled out of the first Test and remains a doubtful starter for the second Test as well. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were ruled out earlier as well.
Sarafaraz Khan makes a long-awaited comeback to the squad. The team will most likely go with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul at the top, with Devdutt Padikkal, fresh off a ton in the warm-up game, taking the Number 3 spot. Shubman Gill, the captain, will bat at 4. Keeper batter Rishabh Pant will bat at 5; Dhruv Jurel is likely to get the nod ahead of Sarfaraz Khan at 6 at this stage. They played against Bangladesh at home and won the series 1-0 before losing away to the West Indies 1-0. They have won one, lost one and drawn two matches to be in 6th place.
The Lankans host India at home now in August before facing Pakistan away in 2 Tests in November. They also have New Zealand away in February 2027 before hosting South Africa also in February 2027. So, it’s a combination of 2-match series for Sri Lanka here, and every game is important as the series looks tricky. Sri Lanka has had to recall Niroshan Dickwella as the keeper-batter owing to injuries. The Lankans will have Nishan Madushka and Lahiru Udara at the top of the order, with Dinesh Chandimal expected to bat at 3.
We might see Pasindu Sooriyabandara making his debut in this Test match. Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis will strengthen the middle-order batting. Niroshan Dickwella will be the keeper, followed by Ramesh Mendis and Sonal Dinusha. Prabath Jayasuriya, Galle’s favourite son, will definitely play, and amongst the pacers, we expect Asitha Fernando to feature alongside either Lahiru Kumara or Vishwa Fernando, both returning from injuries. So, it is a depleted squad, but playing at home will help them.

The pitch at Galle generally acts as a batting paradise for the first two days, allowing for big first-innings totals. There will be gradual wear and tear, which will bring the spinners into the game significantly from days three to five. The pitch may not turn sharply right away as traditional Galle turners, with the pacers getting some early carry. Winning the toss and batting first to put a massive total remains the preferred strategy.
As far as the weather goes, there is a high chance of intermittent rain, showers, and heavy cloud cover across the five days. Daily highs will be around 28-30 degrees Celsius with high humidity levels exceeding 80%, making it physically taxing for the players. Overcast skies and wet spells could potentially cause stop-and-start play, though the local forecasts fluctuate unpredictably.
