Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the current hot topic in Indian cricket. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shocked everyone, right from the media to cricketers and ex-cricketers, with his illustrious achievements and records at a tender age. At 14, Vaibhav became the youngest cricketer to play the IPL and smash the fastest hundred. He also has the record for the highest individual score in the U-19 World Cup: 175 against England.
To own so many records early on in his career is simply unimaginable. It is easy to play on flat tracks and belt the bowlers for fun; however, when it comes to replicating that success in international cricket, many struggle even to meet the bat to the ball. Ajinkya Rahane, who recently hung up his boots from international cricket, accurately distinguished between International cricket and the IPL while speaking about Suryavanshi.

While speaking to Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook, and David Lloyd on a podcast with Stick to Cricket, Ajinkya Rahane reiterated the significance of Test cricket and also spoke about Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s future. He differentiated between the IPL and International cricket. When asked about Suryavanshi’s chances of playing red-ball cricket for India, Rahane said,
“It is tough to comment about it right now. Let him just play and let him just grow.”
Further highlighting the difference between International cricket and the IPL, he said,
“Vaibhav has had two great IPL seasons, and already people are talking about him. But it is only two IPL seasons. What I have realised is that IPL and International cricket are completely different. The pressure when you represent your country is quite high.” Â
Rahane gave a perfect example which explained the main difference between the IPL and International cricket as he said,
“Chasing a probable 70 runs in 4-5 overs in the IPL is easy, but chasing the same amount of runs in international cricket is different.”Â
He later added that Vaibhav needs the right guidance and nurturing in his career to grow and develop as a player. He also believes that it is incorrect to pressurise the youngster and make a hype about him after just two successful IPL seasons.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s topsy-turvy International performance
It is to be seen whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will represent India in the longest format, but he did show some promise in the recently concluded T20 series against Zimbabwe by slamming two half-centuries (*151 runs) in three matches. It was a huge relief for the 15-year-old, and it brought back his confidence after a torrid England tour where he only managed to score 42 runs in 3 games.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been made vice-captain of East Zone for the Duleep Trophy. There’s no doubt that there are high expectations from him & board is giving him a taste of leadership responsibilities. It would be too harsh to expect that he would dominate every match and format, as the game is changing very rapidly.
