IND vs AFG: Sairaj Bahutule Appointed Spin Bowling Coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India spinner Sairaj Bahutule as the spin bowling coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The move adds a highly experienced coach to India’s support staff, with Sairaj Bahutule bringing decades of playing and coaching expertise to the national setup.

BCCI Places Trust in a Proven Cricketing Mind

The appointment reflects BCCI’s confidence in Bahutule’s ability to develop and guide India’s spin-bowling resources across formats. Having worked extensively in domestic and age-group cricket, he has built a reputation for nurturing young talent while also helping experienced players refine their skills.

In an official statement, the board praised Bahutule’s vast experience and contribution to Indian cricket.

” A former India international and a domestic stalwart, Mr Bahutule brings with him a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach. “

His appointment comes at a time when India continues to rely heavily on quality spin bowling in both home and overseas conditions.

An Outstanding Domestic Career

Although Bahutule represented India in two Test matches and eight One-Day Internationals, his greatest impact came in domestic cricket. Over a first-class career spanning nearly two decades, he played 188 matches and picked up 630 wickets, establishing himself as one of the most successful spinners on the Indian domestic circuit.

His contribution was not limited to the ball. Bahutule also scored 6,176 first-class runs, highlighting his value as a genuine all-round cricketer. His consistency and longevity earned him immense respect among teammates and opponents alike.

Such numbers reflect not only his skill but also his deep understanding of the game’s technical and tactical aspects, qualities that are expected to benefit India’s current generation of spinners.

Coaching Journey Across Multiple Levels

Following his retirement from professional cricket, Bahutule transitioned into coaching and quickly became a respected figure in the domestic structure. He has served as head coach for teams such as Vidarbha, Kerala, Gujarat, and Bengal, gaining valuable experience across different cricketing environments.

His coaching résumé also includes stints as spin-bowling coach with Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. Working in franchise cricket exposed him to modern coaching methods and allowed him to work alongside some of the world’s best players.

These experiences have helped him develop a balanced coaching philosophy that combines traditional spin-bowling techniques with contemporary cricketing demands.

Significant Contributions to Indian Cricket Pathways

Bahutule has already played an important role in India’s cricket development system. He was part of the coaching staff of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2022 and also contributed to the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Additionally, he has worked with India A and the senior men’s team on several assignments as a specialist bowling coach. Between 2021 and 2024, he was associated with the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy, now known as the Centre of Excellence, where he helped shape the next generation of Indian cricketers.

His familiarity with many emerging players could prove to be a major advantage in his new role.

Bahutule Expresses Pride After Appointment

The 53-year-old expressed his gratitude and excitement after being named India’s spin bowling coach.

” It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the spin bowling coach of the Indian men’s team. Representing India as a player was a matter of immense pride, and the opportunity to contribute to Indian Cricket once again in a coaching capacity is deeply special. “

Bahutule also emphasized his eagerness to work closely with the players and help the team maintain high standards across all formats of the game.

What His Appointment Means for Team India

India has consistently produced world-class spinners, and Bahutule’s arrival could further strengthen that tradition. His extensive domestic experience, strong player-development background, and understanding of modern cricket make him a valuable addition to the coaching staff.

As India prepares for upcoming international assignments, Bahutule’s expertise will be crucial in helping both established stars and emerging talents continue their growth. His appointment signals BCCI’s commitment to strengthening the team’s spin-bowling resources and maintaining India’s competitive edge on the global stage.
