GT vs RR: Sai Sudharsan & Shubman Gill Ace Run Chase

Qualifier 2 between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) was expected to be a high-pressure contest, especially after RR posted a massive 214/6 on the board. However, Gujarat Titans (GT) made the chase look far easier than expected, due to a sensational partnership of 167 runs in 12.5 overs between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. Their aggressive yet calculated stand completely dismantled Rajasthan’s bowling attack and guided GT into the IPL final with a dominant seven-wicket victory.

From the beginning of the chase, both batters looked clear about their approach. There was no panic despite the massive target. Instead of going for reckless hitting, Gill and Sudharsan focused on maintaining a high scoring rate through timing, placement, and smart shot selection.

Sai Sudharsan Sets The Tone Early

Sai Sudharsan played the role of aggressor in the power play. The left-hander attacked anything short or overpitched and immediately put Rajasthan’s bowlers under pressure. He smashed 58 runs off just 32 balls, including eight boundaries and one six, striking at over 181.

Sudharsan particularly targeted Yash Raj Punja and Tushar Deshpande during the field restrictions. His ability to pierce gaps square of the wicket allowed GT to collect boundaries regularly without taking unnecessary risks. Whenever RR attempted to pull the scoring rate down with spin, Sudharsan used his feet brilliantly and converted singles into attacking opportunities.

The partnership worked so effectively because Sudharsan never allowed the required run rate to climb. His attacking intent gave Shubman Gill enough freedom to settle before launching a counterattack of his own.

Shubman Gill’s Captain’s Knock Under Pressure

While Sudharsan provided the early momentum, Shubman Gill delivered the defining innings of the chase. The GT captain played one of the finest knocks of the season, scoring a magnificent 104 off just 53 deliveries. His innings included 15 fours and three sixes at a strike rate touching 200.

Shubman Gill looked in complete control against both pace and spin. Jofra Archer’s pace was countered with elegant drives and crisp pulls, while Ravindra Jadeja’s spin was handled with excellent footwork and placement. Gill’s biggest strength throughout the innings was his timing. He barely looked rushed despite the required rate staying above ten for most of the chase.

The RR bowlers struggled because Gill constantly rotated strike alongside finding boundaries. Every time Rajasthan attempted to create pressure with dot balls, Gill responded immediately with a boundary. His range of shots through extra cover and midwicket made it difficult for RR to maintain any consistent bowling plan.

The Partnership That Changed The Match

The 167-run opening stand between Gill and Sudharsan completely shifted the momentum of the contest. Rajasthan had entered the innings with confidence after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive 96 helped them cross 200, but Gujarat’s openers erased that advantage quickly. GT scored 69 runs in poweplay overs

What made the partnership special was the balance between aggression and composure. Neither batter looked desperate despite the huge target. They targeted weak overs, rotated strike efficiently, and punished loose deliveries immediately.

Rajasthan Royals bowlers also failed to execute yorkers consistently, which allowed both batters to dominate square boundaries. Archer went for 45 runs in four overs, while Yash Raj Punja and Ravindra Jadeja also struggled to control the scoring rate. Once GT crossed 100 inside ten overs, the chase tilted heavily in their favour.

Gujarat Titans March Into The Final

Although Sudharsan departed for 58 and Gill missed finishing the chase after scoring his century, the damage had already been done. Rahul Tewatia and Jos Buttler calmly completed the chase in just 18.4 overs as the Gujarat Titans reached 219/3.

This victory highlighted why GT remains one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament. Their batting lineup showed composure under pressure, while Gill once again proved why he is among the best T20 batters in the world right now.

Most importantly, the partnership between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan demonstrated a perfect understanding between two top-order batters. One attacked early, the other controlled the middle overs, and together they powered Gujarat Titans into the IPL final in commanding fashion.
