SA-W vs IND-W: Laura Wolvaardt’s Masterclass Seals Series 4-1 For Proteas

South Africa Women (SA-W) capped off a dominant home summer with a professional 23-run victory over India Women (IND-W) at Willowmoore Park, Benoni. While India had shown signs of a resurgence in the previous fixture, the series finale belonged to Captain Laura Wolvaardt, whose sensational unbeaten 92 steered the Proteas to a 4-1 series triumph. The result confirms South Africa’s status as a formidable T20 force, leaving the visitors with plenty to ponder before their next international assignment.

Laura Wolvaardt Leads From The Front In Benoni

After electing to bat first, South Africa’s innings was defined by a tale of two halves. The opening pair of Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus continued their prolific partnership, racing to 49/0 in the Powerplay and eventually putting on 75 runs for the first wicket. Luus provided solid support with 23, but it was Wolvaardt who dictated the tempo.

Her unbeaten 92 off 56 balls* (11 fours, 2 sixes) was a masterclass in controlled aggression, maintaining an 86% control rate throughout. Her most productive shot was the pull, accounting for 20 runs. Despite a middle-order wobble where Tazmin Brits, Annerie Dercksen, Anneke Bosh, and Nadine de Klerk fell cheaply to India’s disciplined trio of Renuka Singh, Shree Charani, and Deepti Sharma, Wolvaardt found a late ally in Sinalo Jafta. Their unbeaten 31-run stand in the death overs propelled SA to a competitive 155/6.

Mlaba And The Spin Squeeze Stifle India’s Chase

India’s pursuit of 156 never truly ignited, largely due to a disciplined South African bowling effort that induced a staggering 49% dot-ball rate. Consistent opener Shafali Verma fell early to Elix-Mari Marx, and the pressure only mounted from there.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout performer with the ball, delivering a clinical spell of 2/15 in her allocated 4 overs – including a maiden. Her ability to target the right-handers with varying lengths accounted for the crucial wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur. Mlaba’s impact extended beyond her bowling, as her sharp work in the field resulted in the run-out of Kranti Gaud, further derailing India’s middle order.

While Bharti Fulmali provided a spirited 40 off 30 balls and Richa Ghosh added a quick-fire 25, the lack of support from the established stars meant India was always behind the required rate. They ultimately finished on 132/8, falling 23 runs short of the target.

Series Wrap: Dominance In All Departments

The 4-1 scoreline accurately reflects the gap between the two sides throughout the tour. South Africa’s ability to win the boundary battle (82 runs to 62) and their superior strike rotation proved to be the difference. For Laura Wolvaardt, the series has been a personal triumph, further solidifying her reputation as one of the premier batters in the women’s game.
