The Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson has been named as a replacement by Chennai Super Kings for his teammate Nathan Ellis. Ellis who was bought for 2 crores by the yellow army has suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury, something he has been fighting with for years now. Ellis featured for Punjab Kings between 2021 and 2024 but now has to take the return flight to Australia and watch his teammate Spencer Johnson play. Although Spencer Johnson is not a regular player and he last played international cricket three years ago. Johnson has been suffering from a back injury which forced him to remain out of action for three long years.
Looking at the gap, it will be difficult for Spencer Johnson to get back into rhythm and CSK may not be rushing for his return; however, the management will track his progress every match and may just launch him at crucial junctures. Johnson has the experience and class needed in t20 cricket, particularly in the IPL where the matches are quite intense and at times go beyond the sleeping hours. The Aussie speedster will join the five-time champions only around 21st to 23rd April due to his ongoing back injury, which forced him to miss the Big Bash, the second most successful tournament. Johnson has the experience of IPL, though, not by playing but simply by being a part of it.
Spencer Johnson now Ready to Go – Ryan Harris
Ryan Harris has been like a mentor to Spencer Johnson and has worked really hard especially during his injury. Harris has helped Jhonson to improve his bowling and polish his lengths. Harris looked positive when he spoke about Johnson’s injury update and he said,
“Spencer Johnson is recovered fully and is raring to go. This IPL would be extremely significant for him to revive his t20 fortunes Spencer has worked hard on his fitness and bowling. We have tried to change a couple of things to avoid further injury scare, hence we made minor adjustments but that has not hampered his bowling much, rather due to his return from injury he has been bowling at half a speed,”
How important is Spencer Johnson for CSK?
With CSK missing some of the key players in Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, the experience of Spencer Johnson will bring more to the table. He can be a force to reckon with ball for CSK if used well and that depends on Gaikwad. Apart from this, Spencer will definitely make CSK’s bowling attack stronger as now they have Mukesh Chaudhary, Khaleel Ahmed, and Spencer Johnson but more importantly CSK has two left-arm bowlers in the side which makes them a real challenge against the teams.
Spencer was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2024 season but suffered from back pain and a stress fracture. This year he was purchased for a whopping 1.5 crore by CSK and will hope to remain fit throughout the season. It is needless to say, that Ruturaj will need the pace bowler’s skillset to knockout the teams. Spencer has played a total of 71 t2o matches for Australia and has been lucky to get close attention from former Australian fast bowler, Ryan Harris. Harris and Jhonson have been working closely and in detail since Spencer Johnson have regained his fitness and is excited to see Jhonson bowling back to his best in the IPL.
