IPL 2026: Kal Somani Acquires RR For Record Breaking Bid

Rajasthan Royals (RR) as we know it has a new owner in town as news broke out last evening of new ownership which will only into effect after IPL 2026. But it is a landmark deal and marquee moment for all concerned. A US-based consortium led by Kal Somani who had a minor stake at Royals now has 100% control of the RR.

Kal Somani has acquired the Rajasthan Royals for $1.63 billion which translates to Rs 15,300 crore. The deal which will come into effect after the 2026 IPL season also includes Rob Walton of Walmart and the Hamp family of Ford.

What We Know Of The Deal And Agreements so far

Rajastha Royals or RR as we fondly call them have new owners as it is a consortium led by Kal Somani who is an Indian origin US-based tech entrepreneur involved in IntraEdge and Truyo, and one who was already an investor since 2021. The other consortium members includes Rob Walton who is son of Walmart founder Sam Walton and the Hamp family who are the owners of NFL’s Detroit Lions which has now brought major US sports investment expertise.

The deal is valued at roughly $1.63 billion which approximately comes to Rs. 15,300 crore which makes it one of the most expensive IPL franchise sales in history. The new ownership will take control of proceedings after the conclusion of IPL 2026 season. The previous primary owner was Manoj Badale from Emerging Media who has held the stake since the inaugural 2008 season.

How Does It Impact The Game?

For starters, this acquisition highlights a massive foreign and institutional investment in IPL teams, with the new ownership group already involved in NFL for Denver Broncos and TGL Golf League. This ownership change is massive as NFL and IPL are going to be talked at the same breadth. Massive money will be involved in the game as IPL treats itself as business and nothing else.

There will be more lucrative deals coming our way in IPL as IPL will not just be restricted to cricket but will slowly become a global brand and business. IPL is one of the most-watched leagues in the world and no one can deny that. If they attract investors from the US, it is great news for them as the IPL value will go up a notch for sure.

With new ownership coming in, there could be more pressure on RR to win an IPL title as they are yet to win one after winning the inaugural edition way back in 2008. On the field, we expect the game to be tightly contested and a good battle between bat and ball, but off the field a lot of involvements will come into play. The new owners will have different planning and may have a voice in changing coaches and have an idea as to how they go about forming the team and making it world beaters.

The new owners could provide the inspiration Rajasthan Royals needs in order to prop up and do well in tournaments. The Royals are yet to taste silverware since 2008 and if they are unable to win the 2026 season, we can expect wholesale changes in RR camp and management. The coaches could be changed and so can the captain be removed after maybe captaining the season for one or two seasons.

Desperate signs will call for desperate measures and if RR fails to win this season, there will be wholesale changes everywhere with new staff recommended by new owners. A new acquisition brings with it its challenges and opportunities and one has to wait and see how things unfold for RR with regards to team management in the season ahead.
