The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) came into the scene in the year 2022 alongside Gujarat Titans. The LSG side started well as they entered the playoffs for the first two years in 2022 and 2023 both times losing in Eliminator to RCB and MI respectively. But the last two seasons haven’t gone according to plan for LSG. They did not make the playoffs in 2024 and even a change in captaincy from KL Rahul to Rishabh Pant did not change their fortunes either.
Rishabh Pant continues to lead the side this season and he will be hoping for a reversal of fortunes to maybe first reach the playoffs and then take it from there. The team has explosive players like last year but may lack a bit in their bowling. But they have the team and will create troubles for the others. Strengths
- Strong Leadership & think-tank: Rishabh Pant enters his second season as captain and he has more clarity and authority with him. He will be backed by elite support staff which includes Justin Langer and Kane Williamson. This gives LSG one of the best tactical set-ups in the league.
- Explosive and flexible batting line-up: The core includes Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram. They are capable of aggressive scoring and adapting to different match situations.
- Strong Pace Attack: The bowling unit includes Mohammed Shami, Anrich Nortje, Mayank Yadav, and Mohsin Khan. They provide variety comprising of swing, pace and death bowling to the line-up of LSG.
- Balanced Squad depth: LSG retained a strong core and added smart picks in the auction and in trades. Overall, the squad looks more balanced than the one they had in 2025.
WeaknessesÂ
- Lack of a proven finisher: Release of David Miller leaves a gap in finishing roles. Players like Josh Inglis and Ayush Badoni are not natural finishers or closers.
- Injury prone core players: There are key players who have recurring injury concerns like Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Marsh, Mohammed Shami, Anrich Nortje, and Mayank Yadav. Any injuries to either of the aforementioned players could disrupt team balance in mid-season.
- Inexperienced middle order: There is heavy reliance on youngsters like Ayush Badoni, and Abdul Samad. There is a lack of consistent match finishing experience in the side.
- Spin department concerns: Compared to the pace attack, spin options are relatively weaker for LSG side.
OpportunitiesÂ
- Redemption after poor IPL 2025: LSG finished 7th last season and this may be a strong motivation to bounce back and punch above their weight.
- Rishabh Pant’s comeback season: There will be huge spotlight on Rishabh Pant with a 27 crore price tag and leadership expectations. A strong season could transform LSG into title contenders from mid table dwellers.
- Top order dominance strategy: The power packed top 4 can overwhelm opponents early. Tactical reshuffle like Pant moving to Number 3 can add flexibility to the team.
- Emerging Indian talents: Players like Ayush Badoni and new recruits like Naman Tiwari can become breakout stars for LSG and can grab the spotlight from established names.
Threats
- Overdependence on star players: LSG are too reliant on Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh for results. The failure of the top order could result and risk in a collapse for the side.
- Pressure and Expectations: Rishabh Pant’s record price and leadership scrutiny adds pressure to him and the side.
- Team Combination and Instability: Frequent changes due to injuries or too much tactical tweaks may hurt consistency in the side.
- Strong Competition: Teams like MI, CSK, GT have more settled cores and they have winning pedigree with them compared to the Super Giants.

Predicted Performance of LSG in IPL 2026Â
It’s tough to predict anything before a ball has been bowled in IPL 2026. But LSG seems another side that could be go big go home. They do not look like a consistent side but have match winners. If they click, they will be world beaters, but if they don’t, then they may struggle. If they punch above their weight, they may reach playoffs. But honest opinion about LSG is that another mid-table finish is on the cards for them.
