Gujarat Titans have appointed former Australia opener and now expert turned commentator Matthew Hayden as their batting coach for IPL 2026. Matthew Hayden, one of the most dominant opening batters of his era, will join a GT support staff that includes Ashish Nehra, Vikram Solanki and Parthiv Patel. He has been previously been batting consultant with the Pakistan men’s cricket team.
Matthew Hayden’s immediate reaction post his appointment.Â
Speaking after his appointment, Matthew Hayden said in a statement: “Good batting applies pressure. Great batting owns the game. That’s the standard we want to set at Gujarat Titans.”Â
Vikram Solanki’s thoughts on the appointment of Matthew Hayden as GT batting coach
Director of Cricket of Gujarat Titans Vikram Solanki felt that the appointment of Hayden would help GT shape their batting identity. Vikram Solanki said: “His experience at the highest level, coupled with his ability to mentor emerging talent, will be instrumental in shaping our batting identity for the seasons ahead.”Â
Matthew Hayden, the two time ODI World Cup winner and ICC hall of famer, has also played 32 matches for Chennai Super Kings winning the title in 2010 and finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer in 2009.
IPL 2026 is set to begin on March 28, although the schedule of matches is not yet out. Gujarat Titans are captained by Shubman Gill and finished third in 2025, bouncing back from their eighth-placed finish in 2024. They won their inaugural season in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2023.
Challenges Ahead for Matthew Hayden in Gujarat Titans.
It will be interesting to see how Matthew Hayden goes about his business in Gujarat Titans. We know he is a great tactician and all that but he also keeps an eye for young talent as well which may be useful for them going ahead. The challenge will be for him to provide results as GT will want to go the distance this time. They won in their first appearance in 2022 and finished runners-up the following year. But they have tapered off since a little bit.
A change in captain has not helped GT yet although Shubman Gill bounced back from the 2024 edition, it was still not enough for the title as they wilted under pressure. The Titans were in good position to finish in top 2 but slipped up and finished in 3rd place. As a result, they had to play the Eliminator clash and fell way short in that game against Mumbai Indians. How, Hayden helps the Titans into a champion winning team remains to be seen.
He will work with the likes of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan and both will benefit of having Hayden as he can inspire and develop their game even more going forward. Then the great Jos Buttler will have the opportunity to work with Hayden. Buttler who had a difficult T20 World Cup 2026 where he could not just buy a run will have the rare opportunity to work and get tips from Hayden.
Matthew Hayden could be the spark and confidence the right-hander from England needs to roar back into form. If the top 3 clicks, much like it did last season, it could go a long way in helping Gujarat Titans do well this season and go top. How he works with the other players, and what kind of batting line-up do the Titans go with remains to be seen.
Hayden’s task will be challenging as to how to work with the other coaches in tandem and creates strategy. He has to dig deep and sit with the coaches and discuss his ideas. He is vastly experienced and brings something new to the table. Hayden would like to co-exist with the star-studded panel and keep the discussion to cricket only. If he can do that and execute well, then sky is the limit for GT, Hayden and others. Let’s see how things unfold in this story.
