In a crucial Super 8 game in Group 1 we will see surprising package and giant killers Zimbabwe in action as they square off against the two-time champions West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After the defending champions and co-hosts India went down to South Africa in Ahmedabad, this game assumes massive significance for both sides and in the group. Zimbabwe will play their matches now in India after being in Sri Lanka for the group stage, so adaptability will be the key factor here.
Zimbabwe under Sikandar Raza will be no pushovers and West Indies will be pushed hard and mustn’t take any side likely. West Indies has had a solid campaign under Shai Hope and has played most of its matches in Mumbai and Kolkata. With Wankhede hosting the Chevrons, West Indies will have the advantage with familiarity of conditions. But Zimbabwe with nothing to lose can come out fighting and beat the much fancied West Indies side. We shall see how this game pans out.
Overview
The Super 8s stage has gotten underway and after the first day washout, we saw co-hosts Sri Lanka and then India go down by large margins which has shaken up both the groups with all to play for in the coming days. On the backdrop of these results from Sunday, we have an important Super 8 game coming our way and it is from Group 1 where Zimbabwe will take on the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the only game today, the fourth of the Super 8s on Monday evening. The match is scheduled to start at 7 PM IST.
It has been an inspiring story from the Chevrons. They failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024. This time they not only made it to the World Cup, but have also qualified for the Super 8s. Skipper Sikandar Raza said after the washout against Ireland, which helped them get a ‘Q’, that qualifying for the Super 8s was one of their goals, but not the ultimate goal. And he also said that if we manage to win a couple of games in this round, then you never know, everybody loves an underdog story.
Beating Australia was stunning. That took the world in awe. But thrashing Sri Lanka in their final group game was something special. Sri Lanka were flying high after a special win against the Aussies and got off to a good start. It was their bowling which won games against Oman and the 2021 champions, while it was their batting which did the job against the Lankans. Brian Bennett anchored with another half-century, and remember, he is yet to be dismissed in this tournament, Sikandar Raza took the game on when things were in balance and ensured there wasn’t much trouble in the run chase.
Zimbabwe have played all their group B games in Sri Lanka. They will be playing all three of their Super 8 fixtures in India. With this being a red-soil surface at the Wankhede, the African nation is all but set to bring Richard Ngarava back into the playing XI. Ngarava missed the Australia game due to a niggle and didn’t play against the Lankans.
Speaking of the West Indies, they have been simply superb so far. Out of the unbeaten times in this tournament, South Africa and the Men in Maroon have been pretty clinical. Not often can one say that the Proteas and the West Indies are favourites in a group that has India.
They defeated Scotland, England, Nepal, and Italy pretty much easily. Their bowling is doing the job, backing up their batters who are in good form, barring Brandon King and Rovman Powell. The 2016 vibe is back for the Caribbean boys. They are playing like a team to beat. Then the winning captain and now the head coach, Daren Sammy, is in all praises and is not taking Zimbabwe lightly either. He also confirmed that all-rounder Romario Shepherd is fit and available for selection.
The West Indies have already played at this venue twice this time, while Zimbabwe are playing a T20I at Wankhede for the first time. Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein, and Gudakesh Motie will definitely play a key role for the West Indies, while Zimbabwe lean on the seam bowling trio of Blessing Muzarabani, Ngarava and Brad Evans as well as the skipper Raza. The two-time champions also have a power-packed batting line-up with Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, and Sherfane Rutherford in form, and the tall Jason Holder with his all-round prowess is capable of swinging the game one-handed.
The stage is set then for an intriguing battle and it remains to be seen can West Indies continue their unbeaten run and kick off their Super 8 campaign with a win? Or will Zimbabwe keep doing their stuff and stun the West Indies, keeping everyone guessing? We shall find that answer out very shortly.
Head-To-HeadÂ
West Indies and Zimbabwe have met against each other on 4 occasions with West Indies winning 3 and Zimbabwe 1. The last time these two teams met was on 19th October 2022 in the T20 World Cup hosted by Australia. West Indies have in fact won the last three encounters as well which takes us back in time to 2013 when these two teams faced T20Is. So, a not to choose from, West Indies has the pedigree and starts as favourites.
Pitch & Weather ReportÂ
The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium is traditionally a batter’s paradise, with true bounce and the ball coming sweetly onto the bat. Fast bowlers may find some swing and seam with the new ball, but conditions generally ease as the innings wear on. Short boundaries and a flat surface could boost the confidence of both West Indies and Zimbabwe batters against each other’s pace attack. At the same time, it’s a venue made for the power-hitters to cut loose, pile on a big total. Zimbabwe will hope to get a grip, having played in Sri Lanka thus far.
The weather conditions on match day look ideal for cricket. According to AccuWeather, no rain interruptions are forecast for the 7 PM IST start at the Wankhede Stadium. Temperatures are expected to range between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are likely to hover slightly above 60%, which could test player endurance.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sidesÂ
Here, we will try and predict the probable playing XIS of both sides.
West Indies XI: Brandon King, Shai Hope (c &wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde/Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph.
Zimbabwe XI: Brian Bennett, Tadiwanashe Marumani (wk), Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza (c), Dion Myers, Tony Munyonga, Tashinga Musekiwa, Wellington Masakadza, Brad Evans, Graeme Cremer/Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Shimron Hetmyer: Shimron Hetmyer has been a revelation batting at 3 as he has kept the tempo going and took down the spinners from the opposition. Batting at Number 3, he can control the innings and then cut loose towards the end as he is a quality player for West Indies. His biggest concern is consistency and he will want to peak at the right time when the Chevrons need it the most.
Gudakesh Motie: He is also one of the key components of this West Indies line-up. Gudakesh Motie comes to bowl in the middle overs and controls things out there in the middle. Motie keeps the runs down and takes wickets at regular intervals to put the pressure on the opposition. He is one of the rare spinners who also turns the ball. He can he hard to get away and West Indies needs to use him properly.
Brian Bennett: Brian Bennett is Zimbabwe’s most dependable player at the present. Bennett has really done wonders for his side and is yet to be dismissed in this tournament. He has stayed unbeaten throughout as he set the platform for the others to play their shots. Bennett’s role clarity is clear as his aim is to bat through the innings, hold one end up and let the others hit from the other end. He provides the much-needed stability in the batting.
Blessing Muzarabani: The standout performer with ball in hand for Zimbabwe has been Blessing Muzarabani. He has been in red hot form in Sri Lanka by taking wickets in powerplay and the end overs as well. He has been the spearhead and go to man later tonight. With extra bounce available in Mumbai’s pitch, Blessing with his height can be a real handful on the Mumbai pitch for the West Indies batters. He was on a wicket-taking spree in Sri Lanka, and will want to carry that on here.
Key Stats and Records to look forward to in this clashÂ

- Zimbabwe have never played a T20I in Mumbai before.
- Muzarabani enters the Super Eight as the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament, level with Varun Chakaravarthy. He has nine wickets and an average of 7.88.

- Having scored 175 runs so far, Brian Bennett is yet to be dismissed in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match
Anything can happen in the game of cricket and it is the first meeting between the two sides as well after a long time and also first game for both in this Super 8s stage. But looking at everything, it is safe to say that due to familiarity with the conditions and venue, West Indies will start as favourites. Having said that, Zimbabwe won’t mind an underdog story either and can play freely.
So, we are in for a cracking game in Mumbai where anything can happen but the Windies playing here already 2 times before will hold a slight edge in our view. Let’s wait and see whether Zimbabwe can create a surprise in Mumbai because if that happens, the road for India gets really tough if we are being brutally honest about it.
