ICC T20 WC 2026: England Make Continuous Inroads Against West Indies

In a Group C clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, West Indies were put into bat by England and after some wayward lines and lengths from Jofra Archer, he came back and got rid of Shai Hope the West Indies captain. Soon, Brandon King fell cheaply to Sam Curran. But the counter-attack from West Indies was there to see as Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase took the attack to the opposition. But Jamie Overton hit back to get rid of Hetmyer and this powerplay has gone England’s way.

England strike thrice despite West Indies counter-attack in powerplay

Put into bat first, Brandon King and captain Shai Hope came out to bat for West Indies while Jofra Archer came to bowl for England. Archer started with wides and 5 wides gifted to the batting side as well. But Archer hit back and got rid of Hope for a bronze duck. Archer bowled it shorter than ideal very wide. Hope slashed hard and made a decent connection but found Tom Banton at cover point where he made no mistake. Shimron Hetmyer came to the crease next.

Sam Curran came into the attack next and removed King for 1 off 3 balls. Curran bowled a full ball speared outside the off-stump from over the wicket. King reached for it and pumped it over covers. He could not find the desired connection as Salt who was stationed as the sweeper dived forward to take the good catch. Roston Chase came out to bat and got off the mark with a brace.

Archer continued as Hetmyer hammered it away over point for a boundary. Chase then leaned into the drive through extra cover and mid-off for a boundary. Sam Curran continued as Hetmyer clobbered it over midwicket for the maximum. Hetmyer clipped him away past long leg for a boundary.

Will Jacks came into the attack next and he was taken to by West Indies. Chase first got into the act as he smacked it away inside out over extra covers for a boundary. Then he swept him away behind square for a boundary. Chase then went up and over extra covers for the boundary. Hetmyer got into the act as he pummelled the ball over square leg region for the maximum. The 50 came up for West Indies inside 5 overs as 19 came off that over.

Jamie Overton came into the attack next to bowl the last over of powerplay. Run out chance was missed as Hetmyer survived a risky single. Overton provided the breakthrough for England as he removed Hetmyer for 23 off 12 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Overton directed the short ball at the body and got up to chest height. It was also pace off the ball as the left-hander wanted to pull it away and probably towards square leg but the ball got the top edge towards short fine leg where Sam took the catch safely.

Drinks was taken at this point after which Sherfane Rutherford came to the crease next. West Indies were 55/3 in 6 overs at the end of the powerplay with Chase unbeaten on 21 off 17 balls and Rutherford having just joined the crease.

Roston Chase falls as England tighten the screws on West Indies

Adil Rashid came into the attack post the powerplay and bowled a quiet over. Jamie Overton continued as Chase whipped the ball away to the right of deep backward point for a boundary. Liam Dawson came into the attack next. Chase helped it on its way past the keeper for a boundary.

Adil Rashid continued and got rid of Chase for 34 off 29 balls with 6 fours to his name. Rashid bowled a googly around off-stump turning into the batter. Chase went back and got across to flick. He got a bit tangled and failed to lay his bat on the ball. He got beaten on the inside edge and got rapped in the back pad. Appeal was given. Chase reviewed in hope and it was three reds on ball tracking.

Rovman Powell came to the crease next. He got off the mark with a brace. West Indies were 79/4 in 10 overs at the halfway stage of the game with Powell on 2* off 3 balls and Rutherford on 8* off 10 balls.

What Lies Ahead

England have done well to chip away at the wickets to keep West Indies down to 79/4 in 10 overs. West Indies bats deep and needs 180+ to make a match out of this contest. England on top at this stage but the Windies bat deep. A fascinating last 10 overs comes our way.
