IND vs SA: 3 Reasons For India’s Crushing Loss In 2nd T20I

Hosts India crashed to a humiliating 51-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in New Chandigarh as the visitors bounced back from their Cuttack debacle to level the series 1-1 with 3 matches to play. India were outplayed in all facets one can say and they were exposed in both batting and bowling. If this does not serve up as a wake-up call for the Men in Blue, God knows what will. There were a lot of areas where India were found wanting and we will list three of them for you.

Arshdeep Singh & Jasprit Bumrah having an off-day put India on the back foot.

The Indian pacers had a night to forget especially the two premier pacers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah. Even Hardik Pandya the other pacer went for runs but our focus is on the two main pacers who have got 100+ wickets each. While they started decently initially but went for a lot in the middle and then in the death overs. Quinton de Kock took them to the cleaners while Donovan Ferreira and David Miller finished things off nicely.

Arshdeep had a night to forget as he bowled 7 wides in the 11th over which turned out to be a 13-ball over and he went for 54 runs in 4 overs in front of his home ground. The amount of wides he bowled alone were staggering as he gave away 10 out of 16 wides bowled by India. Jasprit Bumrah was also off-colour as he went for plenty at the death overs and finished with 0/45 in 4 overs. South Africa managed to score 49 runs in last 3 overs to take the game completely away from India.

Both Arshdeep and Bumrah are champion bowlers and know how to bounce back. It will be a test of character for them as to how they respond to this loss and their form. They will want to hit back and India needs them to fire in unison if they are to put in a good bowling display. This bowling display was listless and lacked direction to say the least.

Losing 3 wickets inside the powerplay in a huge chase put India in big trouble.

Chasing 214 for the win, India needed a perfect outing with the bat which meant they needed a good start. But that was far from happening as India lost out of form Shubman Gill early for a golden duck. Yashasvi Jaiswal felt the pressure and got a start before he too fell and the captain of the side Suryakumar Yadav coming at 4 below Axar Patel too fell for 5. This meant India were 3 down inside 4 overs and scored 51 runs all right but lost 3 wickets in 6 overs.

Once India lost 3 wickets even with batting depth, they were playing catch-up and just couldn’t keep up with it. Yes, they showed glimpses later on from Tilak Varma and Jitesh Sharma in particular but that was to no avail as it had become a bridge too far in the end. It is high time that the top order fires because it has been misfiring lately and it is players from down the order who were rescuing India. But that was not the case in New Chandigarh. If one loses 3 or more wickets in powerplay, then 9 times out of 10 you lose the match and that proved to be the case.

Going forward, India would want a better start in powerplay whether batting first or chasing to make life easier for middle order batters. One cannot put the onus on the middle order to do heavy lifting. The top order especially the captain and vice-captain needs to take more responsibility. They cannot keep hiding behind the youngsters. So, from Game 3 onwards, one will hope India gets a better start or else South Africa might run through them.

Continuous underperformance of Shubman Gill & Suryakumar Yadav hurting India’s chances.

Let’s now focus on the main reason for India’s defeat or should we say the elephant in the room. The continuous underperformance of Vice-Captain Shubman Gill and captain Suryakumar Yadav. In a chase of 214 on a belter with dew around, it was the perfect opportunity for Gill and Surya to lead from the front, stand up and be counted to shut the critics and set the base in the chase. But they did anything but that and it turned out to be a disaster.

Shubman Gill fell first ball to Ngidi as he was caught at slip while Surya fell to Marco Jansen caught by the keeper on review for 5. This meant pressure on others especially Abhishek Sharma who ain’t getting any support from his senior partners and he can’t rescue you all the time. This is not the first time that Gill and Surya failed, it has become a regular pattern. Surya is averaging 11 in 2025 with a low strike rate while Shubman Gill’s numbers don’t support him to be a T20 player. He has continuously failed in the shortest format has Gill.

For how long, will they keep underperforming and getting rewarded being captain and vice-captain? Where is the performance from both these players. With World Cup around the corner, these two really needs to pull up their socks. If they continue to fail and there is no accountability, then forget this T20I series, India will have a disastrous World Cup 2026. Indian fans will be hoping, he stands up and be counted in the remaining games and gives India something to be relieved about.

What Lies Ahead.

The series is nicely poised at 1-1 with 3 games to spare. The next clash will take place in Dharamshala on Sunday 14th December, 2025 at 7 PM IST and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. The first two T20Is have been one-sided and we hope that the third game provides a nail biter no matter who wins. Both teams have issues to address ahead of the marquee tournament.

Let’s see how the third game pans out between the teams.
