SA vs IND 1st Test Day 3 Match Review: Temba Bavuma’s Bewildering Half-Century Helps South Africa Come Out On Top
As the first match between South Africa and India has officially been completed, this was quite intense, given the number of times either side had control over finishing this fixture quite rapidly. Seeing that South Africa came out on top, it was all due to a brilliant day of bowling and finishing of the innings strongly, as their conditions weren’t very favorable. A group that still didn’t have top pacer Kagiso Rabada, he was a big loss that they had to work through, while there is real potential he returns in the second match. Leading the Proteas unit was Temba Bavuma, who continues showing how his motivation and never-give-up mentality have helped this unit continue striving for success.
On the India side, there will be a world of regret as they expected to win this match quite easily, and none of that ended up coming to reality. As Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah had said something very controversial to the South African leader a couple of days back, ever since that moment, it has seemed like things have continued going downhill for this ITC side. Knowing that Shubhman Gill had to miss most of this match with a neck injury that was really bothering him, he ended up being a much bigger miss for this side than expected. Looking at the previously mentioned, Rishabh Pant taking over captaincy, he did show some prior experience he had in this position, but also struggled to keep up with the intensity of the match at times.
South Africa: Finish The Innings Off In A Very Strong Manner During Tough Conditions
Looking at South Africa, they had come in very hamstrung during these innings as their group started out at 93/7. Just leading by a little over 60 runs, all the pressure was on Temba Bavuma and Corbin Bosch to create some type of partnership. With Bavuma starting off the day at 29 runs and being the only real batsman who played these conditions well, there was a lot of reliance on his end, as he ended up being the only true batting threat left. When this duo got going during their first couple overs together today, it was looking impossible to get anyone out and break this partnership that went for 44 runs. Bosch really put his foot down from the other end and was able to execute all parts of the ground while hitting three combined boundaries and 25 runs.
Having scored two boundaries and one six, he was able to lead this side to 135/8 and a lead of over 100. On the other end, Bavuma ended up crossing another half-century and looked like a complete game-changer once again after proving how well he does under pressure. Someone who hit four classy boundaries and showed his real ability in playing this long-format style, he continued on with Simon Harmer, who helped them get past 150. As Harmer scored 7 runs, he wasn’t able to create any boundaries, but still ran quickly between the wickets. When he ended up going down as their 9th wicket lost, Keshav Maharaj got trapped in the front by Mohammed Siraj to cause this side to finish at 153/10, with Bavuma remaining not-out at 55.
India: Bowlers Struggled Towards The End After Quite A Fast Start
For India, their bowling attack was unable to hit that same ability they finished yesterday off with. Having taken 7 wickets in that last session yesterday, and looking like their spinning department was dominating, today definitely seemed quite different after the Proteas unit showed that their plan was very clear. As Kuldeep Yadav ended with 8.0 overs today, he gave up 30 runs during that period and ended up being stuck on those same two wickets from what he produced on the second day. Seeing that Ravindra Jadeja came in from the same end, he ended up finishing at 20 overs, while keeping that economy rate near what he ended up doing yesterday.
Not picking up any new wickets, alongside Axar Patel, their pacers were the only real pieces that made a difference in this match. Jasprit Bumrah ended up picking another wicket on a great-timed yorker to remove the dangerous Corbin Bosch, while he kept his economy around that 2.4 mark. Known for bowling in the same direction and at close to similar speeds, he almost ended up getting another one while having 10 brilliant overs completed. In the final over of South Africa’s innings, Mohammed Siraj was also able to produce two wickets while allowing just two runs on nearly 12 deliveries. With him being known for these situations on closing the deal and removing the remaining batters on the opposing side, he proved it once again in this situation.
India: An Absolutely Stunning Ending To Their Innings That Created A Tough Loss
After a solid first innings, which had given them a 30+ run lead, India were tasked with chasing down 124 runs to end up winning this match. Something that would have seen like a pretty simple task for them, it clearly ended up not being that way today as their side got bowled out for less than 100. Opener Yashashvi Jaiswal was removed in the first four balls after getting a ball delivered from left-handed star Marco Jansen, and causing this unit to start 0/1. Losing KL Rahul a couple of balls later to Marco Jansen as well, it put India in an even bigger hole as both openers ended up being forced to leave within the first three overs of this innings.
Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant were able to combine for 32 runs, while creating a tension-filled partnership since it started bringing pressure towards this Proteas side. As Jurel ended up being the next wicket, taking this unit to 33/3, he hit three wonderful boundaries but was removed at 13. Losing Rishabh Pant for two right after him, Axar Patel was brought in and created a 26-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Losing Jadeja for 18 on 26 balls, while hitting two fours, Axar Patel continued thriving with Washington Sundar as they got the score to 72/5. With Sundar being removed for 31 after hitting two fours, Axar was able to score 26 with three combined boundaries. Having both of them gone, India relied on their bottom order, which saw them finish 93/10.
South Africa: One Of The Strongest Bowling Performances In Recent Memory Gave This Side Victory
South Africa had a tremendous plan when bowling to this Indian side, and it was a major key to why they got them all out for 93 runs. Left-handed pacer Marco Jansen had 7 fantastic overs in which he let up just 15 runs and was the first one to strike for this unit. Picking up two quick wickets, it really built pressure on the opposing side and allowed spinners to do their job. Simon Harmer was once again fantastic as he took another 4-wicket haul and had four clean maidens, while staying consistent throughout his 14-over spell. Known to create turn, that was on full display today, while Keshav Maharaj had also added two wickets from the other end to help this unit come out on top by 30 runs.
