Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a heartfelt promise that has fans buzzing ahead of the Women’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final. The former India captain said he’s ready to jam with Jemimah Rodrigues if India beat South Africa in the grand finale on Sunday.
“If India win the World Cup, she and I, if she’s okay with it, will sing a song together,” Gavaskar told Sports Today. “She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along. We actually did that once at one of the BCCI awards a couple of years back. There was a band playing, and we just decided to join in. She was on the guitar, and I sang with my whatever voice I have. But if India win, I would love to do it again—if she is happy to do that, happy to do that with an old man. I am all for it,” he added.
The Gavaskar–Rodrigues Connection
This musical camaraderie between generations first came alive at the BCCI Awards 2024, when the two shared an impromptu on-stage performance. The memory has since lived on among fans — and Gavaskar’s renewed promise adds another layer of anticipation to India’s final clash.
His comments came right after India’s emphatic win against defending champions Australia in the semi-final on Thursday. Jemimah Rodrigues led from the front with a magnificent 126 not out, scripting the highest individual score in an ODI chase for India. The Women in Blue successfully hunted down 339, marking the highest chase in the history of women’s ODIs.
Gavaskar’s ‘Lucky Jacket’ Legacy
Sunil Gavaskar’s passion for supporting the national team is legendary. Known for his endearing superstitions, the 75-year-old often ties emotions to the team’s fortunes. Earlier, during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Gavaskar’s iconic white jacket became a symbol of luck and pride.
Throughout the tournament, he sported the same jacket he wore during India’s historic Gabba Test victory in 2021. He even promised skipper Shubman Gill he would wear it for every key encounter. And true to his word, he did — right until India’s triumphant win over New Zealand in the final, when he broke into a childlike victory dance in the commentary box, delighting millions of viewers worldwide.
