SA vs PAK 1st T20I Preview: Can The Newcomers On This Proteas Side Make A Difference Against One Struggling Squad?
With the first T20I match between South Africa and Pakistan ahead, it will be interesting to see which team can start stronger and gain complete control of this series. As the Proteas have slowly become a top-notch nation in this format over the past couple of years, including their run to the finals last time out, this confidence will continue to be instilled in them. Although such figures like Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram won’t be available for this series, their biggest return yet is Quinton De Kock, who will be playing for the South Africa unit after well over a year. Looking at Donovan Ferreira being the captain for this side, it will pose a new challenge as he’s somewhat new to playing at the international stage.
For Pakistan, their hope is to finally get back on track in this format after they lost to Bangladesh and nearly got shocked by West Indies earlier on this year. Seeing that they were a group who used to dominate this type of cricket a couple decades ago, that has no longer lasted, and a series win here will make them look like a competent side. Knowing that their board and players have continued sliding down, while it seems to be that politics has taken over their T20I team, piling together a few wins against teams they have no business beating will really boost their confidence. As their captain, Salman Ali Agha hasn’t been the greatest of leaders and been part of several controversies; they will look for other pieces like Babar Azam to help him just focus on cricket.
South Africa’s Lineup Will Be Filled With Some Very Strong Backup Options To Boost Them
Looking at the Proteas batting unit, their side will have many newer styled options because a lot of their main players have been asked to take rest, since this isn’t such a challenging series. With Reeza Hendricks potentially getting a start to open after being in and out for so many years, his shot-making ability should give them a chance to score fast. Someone who has put up 2,389 runs in this format and is currently batting at a near 30 average with 17 half-centuries, he has built himself into a prolific power hitter as well. Hoping to open with Quinton De Kock on the other end, he finally gets to make his comeback against a full-time member in this format and should try getting himself back into form.
Another player who has scored over 2,500 runs, his ability to play reverse sweeps and many other shots in the book allows for him to consistently bat deep into innings. Scoring 2,585 combined in his career, he should be great for one-down batsmen, Lhaun-Dre Pretorious to learn from, as this is someone who is finally waiting to boost that average. After several rough outings in which he would get completely dominated, this could finally be a breakout innings, while Matthew Breetzke or Tony De Zorzi may get a run at two down. With Dewald Brevis, 345 runs in 12 innings, and Donovan Ferreira being vital in making differences in that middle order, Corbin Bosch and George Linde should also produce some vital runs.
Bowling Attack Of The Proteas Provides Many Scary Pacers and Spinners
For this Proteas bowling attack, it is clear that the side features many dangerous options with the ball in hand and can come from either end. With Lungi Ngidi being their main right-handed pacer during this match, he is someone who has taken 70 wickets during 50 matches and uses his height as a massive advantage. Given that he’s always created a bouncer threat with that height, his speed on the ball really fools batsmen from taking him on. Despite having an economy near 9, it will all depend on how many wickets he takes, while Kwena Maphaka is someone they will be looking at from the left end. Being a piece that really broke out in the Australia series, his confidence is over the moon right now.
Someone who has taken 15 wickets in just 13 matches, this is their one player who just relies on pace and doesn’t mind hurting his economy if he can find ways to pick up wickets. For Corbin Bosch, this is someone who has slowly become a full-time player for this squad and taken 10 wickets during his first 8 appearances. One pacer that they rely on under pressure, he has provided at a consistent basis and should really make an impact with an economy less than 8 in those overs. As it’s pretty clear they may not favor Andile Simelane much due to his past struggles, Nandre Burger will close out this attack well from the left end and leave Nqaba Peter as their only spin option.
Pakistan Have A Very Incosistent Batting Approach That May Come To Haunt Them
On Pakistan’s side, their batting lineup is not one that can be fully trusted unless someone really steps up and makes a huge difference. Given that opener Saim Ayub had a very tough recent run at the Asia Cup and has been called out for his 0 and 1 scores, his performance will really need to change in order to give this side some hope. Opening with either Fakhar Zaman most likely, this is someone who has been the only bright spot for this Pakistan unit, as he is approaching 2,300 T20I runs. Given that his perspective in batting doesn’t match the holes other batsmen on this side cause, he still has found a way out of it and can produce half-centuries whenever pressure hits them.
Seeing that Babar Azam is coming back, it will be very interesting to see if he still bats around that 100 strike rate or has actually improved in going for the bigger shots. Someone called out for taking up way too many balls in the past, all eyes will be focused on him. In the middle order, Salman Ali Agha is a piece that can’t be fully relied upon, as he has only scored 561 runs in 32 innings and looks completely lost at times. With Hussain Talat barely holding on to an average that is over 20 runs an over, Mohammed Nawaz will be asked to build on his 18 average down the order. As Hassan Nawaz is right near him, these two will be asked to do a lot if Pakistan gets in trouble early.
Bowling Will Need To Show Up After Having Very Up-And-Down Performances Lately
Looking at Pakistan’s bowling attack, it has been very similar to their batsmen in the sense that not having consistent bowlers has plagued them a lot. With Shaheen Afridi being their main pacer from the left-end, this is someone who can consistently hit the same line if he is focused. Known for having lackadaisical performances many times, he does have 118 wickets during 92 matches, but has also faced economic struggles. Given that a lot of his bowling figures are distributed separately, their other piece in Harris Rauf hasn’t had success against big-time nations. Giving an economy over 8.35, having Naseem Shah in their lineup will give this side some hope, but it all depends on how Salman Ali Agha and Mohammed Nawaz spin the ball.
