Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav Downplays His Disappointing Batting Performance

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav downplayed his disappointing batting performance in Asia Cup 2025. Suryakumar Yadav stated that he believed in working hard in the nets and expressed confidence that the results will follow sooner rather than later.

For the record, the Men in Blue India lifted their 9th Asia Cup title by defeating arch rivals Pakistan by 5 wickets in a tense final in Dubai on Sunday, September 28th. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s lean patch with the bat continued. He was dismissed cheaply for 1 off 5 balls caught at mid-off while trying to take on Shaheen Afridi.

Suryakumar Yadav weighs in on his own form

Appearing at the post-match press conference, the Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was asked about his poor performance with the bat in Asia Cup 2025. Surya was not too critical of himself when he replied to journalists.

Suryakumar Yadav said: “Speaking of form, I believe more in what I am doing in the nets, how spot on I am in my preparations. I focus more on that. After the match starts, everything is on autopilot. You may say I am out of form, but I feel I am not out form, I am out of runs. That will come.”

Suryakumar Yadav further added: “You just need to keep practicing. Rest, God is watching from above. If you keep doing well, the rewards will come at the right time.”

Suryakumar Yadav for the record ended Asia Cup 2025 with just 72 runs in six innings at an average of 18 and a below par strike rate of 101.40. The right-handed batter’s best of 47* off 37 balls came in the group match against Pakistan in Dubai,

Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form: A Huge Concern for Team India

Suryakumar Yadav has an impressive record if we consider his overall record in T20Is. But his batting numbers since taking over as captain of India in the shortest format has been a massive concern for India if we keep the 2026 T20 World Cup in mind. In 29 matches as captain, Suryakumar has scored 630 runs at an average of 25.20 and a strike rate of 152.54. The Mumbai Indians star has one hundred and four half centuries in the format as captain.

If we compare his record when not captaining the side and playing as a pure player, the aggressive batter Yadav has an average of 43.40 from 61 games. In 58 innings, he smashed 2,040 runs at a strike rate of 168.17 which includes three hundreds and 17 half centuries.

It is high time that Suryakumar Yadav the batter turns up for India as that can also help his captaincy even more. As a captain, he is doing a great job, but as a batter he has been out of form. He has lately become a walking wicket and easy one to get for the opposition. This is a matter of grave concern and Surya needs to get back amongst the runs. At the end of the day, results matter at the end of the day. Efforts that you put in count for nothing.

If Surya returns to form, the respect within the group will only grow. He commands respect for his leadership skills but it is high time he gets runs because he occupies the Number 3 spot now which is important in T20Is. With India playing aggressive brand of cricket, an early wicket could fall. So, Surya needs to get back into form since the other players around him are in good form. He has the talent to do it, the question is does he have the temperament to roar back and get back into form. Only time will tell.

One hopes that when India plays Australia in Australia in a bilateral 5-match series, Surya roars back into form and performs for India. If he starts scoring runs, India will do well for sure as it is without him they are doing well. But this is one missing piece that needs to be solved at the earliest.
