Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka’s Ecstasy ,Afghanistan’s Exit

Sri Lanka‘s march in the Asia cup 2025 continues to gather momentum , and their latest triumph against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi was nothing short of exhilarating . Under the Sheikh Zayed Stadium , Charith Asalanka‘s men showed resilience , composure and a sense of purpose and a sense of purpose that has carried now carried them into the Super 4s alongside Bangladesh . For Afghanistan , though the loss ended their campaign leaving their fans heartbroken after moments of brilliance from their side went vain

Mohammad Nabi’s Late Blitz keeps Afghanistan Alive

The evening began with Rashid Khan winning the toss choosing to bat first . Afghanistan had one plan on the board and allow their spinners to defend . Initially the innings faltered with regular wickets falling but just when it seemed the Lankans control veteran All rounder Mohammad Nabi unleashed a storm.

His blistering 22 ball 60 , laced with the five sixes in a single over off Dunith Wellalage lifted Afghanistan to 169/8 . For much of the innings 130 looked par but Nabi ‘s late fireworks brought belief back into Afghan camp and gave their bowlers something to fight for.

Kusal Mendis Anchors the Chase

Chasing 170 was never going to be easy Afghanistan’s farmed spin attack led by Rashid Khan , Noor Ahmad , and Mujeeb Ur Rahman . However , Sri Lanka approached the target with clam heads . Pathum Nissanka fell early but the experienced Kusal Mendis anchored the chase beautifully . His 74off 52 balls was masterclass in pacing an innings rotating strike punishing loose deliveries and ensuring the required  run rate never spiraled out of control . Alongside him contributions from Kusal Perera and Asalanka kept the momentum steady .

Afghan Bowlers Lose Their Grip

Afghanistan’s blowers , suprisingly lacked discipline on the big night . Farooqi was wayward Mujeeb failed to build pressure and even Rashid though economical couldn’t provide breakthroughs when most needed . Dropped chances and misfields added their misery

What was expected to be tense contest turns into a clinical run chase , with Sri Lanka sealing victory in just 18.4 overs . Mendis fittingly hit the winning runs a moment that sparkled jubilation among the players alike .

Sri Lanka Rise , Afghanistan Fall

This Victory wasn’t just about two points , it was a statement . Sri Lanka ‘s batting unit showed they could withstand one of the toughest bowling attacks in the tournament . With three wins in the group stage they enter the super 4 s full of confidence and momentum.

For Bangladesh too their result was a reason to celebrate as it confirmed their progression . On the flip side , Afghanistan will reflect on What went wrong . Despite Nabi’s heroics their over  dependence on a few individuals and lapses in execution cost them dearly . Their campaign once filled with promise , ended with disappointment.

The Road Ahead

Sri Lanka march into the super 4s with confidence . Tough battles against India and Pakistan await , but Thursday’s ecstasy proves the Islanders are ready for bigger tests .
