Asia Cup 2025: 3 Reasons For Oman’s Crushing Loss Against UAE

Oman crashed to yet another loss in Asia Cup 2025 as they went down against UAE in the day’s first game at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. They lost by 42 runs as Oman got knocked out of Asia Cup 2025 while UAE kept their hopes alive. India are now officially through to the Super 4s from this Group A. There were many reasons why Oman lost this game and we will ascertain three reasons why they lost to UAE.

Losing 4 wickets in the powerplay chasing 173 pegged Oman back

Oman were chasing a competitive score, a score that was a little above par and a good solid start was required in the chase. They needed to get a solid start and the foundation needed to be laid to get the chase going and reach the target. Instead, they lost early wickets and caved in under pressure in the powerplay. They lost 4 wickets in the powerplay for 41 runs in 6 overs and never really recovered from this predicament.

They lost Aamir Kaleem in the first over while Jatinder Singh dragged one on. Wasim Ali was the next one to be dismissed before Hammad Mirza fell all inside the powerplay. Once you lose 4 wickets in the powerplay, you are always under pressure. Oman could never really recover from this predicament and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. They were 5 down inside 10 overs and eventually got bowled out in the end. But the start is where they suffered.

Looking ahead to their final game against India, Oman will need to get their batting right and bat well otherwise another thrashing could be instore for them. Jatinder Singh and company have to lead from the front and get the powerplay batting right in order to be successful in big games. Otherwise more disappointments will come their way in the remaining game. Powerplay batting is very important and that is where Oman lacked.

Inability to break the opening stand of Alishan Sharafu and Muhammad Waseem hurts Oman dear

Oman won the toss and elected to bowl first and would have hoped for quick wickets. They kept it quiet for the first 3 overs as UAE openers Sharafu and Waseem got their eye in. But then they stepped it on and laid the foundation for their side. The duo put on 50 in the first powerplay as Sharafu was the aggressor while Waseem played second fiddle and almost played the entire 20 overs.

The duo put on 88 for the first wicket in 11 overs. Oman bowled lacked basic planning bowling to them. Too many slot balls were bowled and length as well as UAE batters took them to the cleaners in the 88-run opening stand. It meant that UAE had a platform and base to get to a competitive score on the board. It is this partnership that enabled UAE to get to 172 or else they may have had to settle for somewhere around 150-160. Contrast that to Oman’s batting innings and wickets fell like nine pins. This is where the game was won and lost.

Looking ahead, Oman must be incisive in their bowling and bowl tight lines and lengths. They need to get early wickets to put pressure on any opposition. If they fail to do so, they will struggle. The opening partnership laid the platform for the win it must be said as Oman caved in under pressure. A much-improved performance is needed by Oman if they want to go to the next level sooner rather than later.

Inability to handle Junaid Siddique hampers Oman’s progress

The star of the show with the ball was Junaid Siddique and he bowled really well with the runs on the board. Junaid who is an experienced campaigner and the only bowler who has over 100 T20I wickets for UAE came to the party yesterday. After blowing hot and cold in the Tri-Series and in the game against India, he finally showed his prowess against UAE.

The way he bowled was something that was extraordinary to see and watch. He executed his skills really well. Oman batters were found wanting tackling him and had no idea playing him. Oman has played UAE before a lot of times and have an idea as to how Siddique bowls. But it seemed they had no idea how to tackle him yesterday. Some of the players even played loose shots and paid a heavy price. He ended up with excellent figures of 4/23 in 4 overs dismissing Jatinder Singh, Aamir Kaleem, Vinayak Shukla, and Hassnain Ali Shah as Oman lost wickets at regular intervals.

Going forward, Oman needs to learn how to play the main bowlers and come up with better planning and execution against them. They need to go back to the drawing board and see where they are going wrong and come back stronger. They are a talented lot and have the capability of doing well. They need more game time one feels but Siddique was brilliant against Oman.
