Hundred 2025: Manchester Originals Open Their Account With A Close Win Over London Spirit

Manchester Originals delighted their fans at Old Trafford as they broke a 6-match losing streak to beat London Spirit by 10 runs in a high-scoring close game at Emirates Old Trafford. Manchester Originals meant business and got their first win in 3 games while London Spirit lost their second game in three matches. Originals batting first, rode on all-round batting display led by Jos Buttler to post 163/6 in 100 balls.

In the chase, David Warner was going great for London Spirit with his 71 off 51 balls. But Josh Tongue’s 3-wicket haul including the wicket of Warner turned the tide in the home team’s favour as London Spirit could only get to 153/6 in 100 balls as Manchester Originals registered a 10-run win to open their account in Hundred 2025.

Jos Buttler’s 46 highlights an all-round batting display as Originals post 163/6

Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Philip Salt and Ben McKinney walked out to bat for the Originals while Olly Stone had ball in his hand for London Spirit. Salt made his intentions clear hitting two boundaries in the first 5 balls bowled by Stone. Richard Gleeson bowled the next set as Salt took him on as well hitting him for a boundary. Liam Dawson came into the attack and McKinney took him on and deposited him over deep midwicket for the maximum. He followed that up with another boundary over covers.

McKinney then took full control of proceedings as he hit two sixes off three balls off Gleeson. He followed that up with another boundary. Jamie Overton came to bowl the final set of powerplay and got rid of McKinney for 29 off 12 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes to his name. Overton bowled it short and angling away, McKinney goes for the pull shot but he finds the man at deep square leg with perfection as Chohan took the catch. Jos Buttler came out to bat next.

Overton gifted 5 wides away to Salt as the 50 came up for Originals and Salt hit him for another boundary through cover point. After the first 25 balls of powerplay, Manchester Originals were 57/1. Jafer Chohan came into the attack post the powerplay. Salt took him to task by hitting him for a maximum. Liam Dawson came back to bowl a quiet set. Buttler got into the act as he launched Chohan for a maximum.

Buttler then greeted Olly Stone with a boundary but Stone bounced back by getting rid of Salt for 31 off 20 balls with 4 fours and a six to his name. Stone bowled it short and slow outside off, Salt looked to pull but he miscued it. The man at long-on Jamie Overton ran to his left to take a simple catch. Heinrich Klaasen came out to bat next and got off the mark as well. Overton bowled a decent set as Manchester Originals after 50 balls at the halfway stage of the innings were 90/2.

Liam Dawson came back into the attack and was hammered by Buttler for a maximum. Klaasen got a boundary off Stone as the 100 came up for Originals in 57 balls. Chohan bowled a decent set while Buttler hit Overton for a boundary. Klaasen then hit Dawson down the ground for a boundary. After 75 balls, Manchester Originals were 125/2. Klaasen was getting into the groove as he hit Gleeson for a boundary as well. But Stone hit back and got rid of Klaasen for 24 off 17 balls with 3 fours to his name.

Stone bowled a back of a length delivery around off slower ball, Klaasen made room for himself and looked to loft it over the top of mid-off. He mistimed it from the toe end of the bat. Williamson took a simple catch at mid-off. Mark Chapman came out to bat next and got off the mark with a brace. Chohan cut Chapman’s stay at the crease dismissing him for 2 off 4 balls. Bowling from over the wicket, Chohan bowled a short a length delivery outside off, googly, Chapman rocked back and slapped it from the toe end of the bat. Williamson at short cover dived to his left and took a good catch with both hands. Lewis Gregory came out to bat next.

Gregory hit Chohan for a maximum over long-on. Buttler hit Gleeson for a boundary down the ground but Gleeson hit back getting rid of Jos Buttler for 46 off 37 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Gleeson bowled a short of a length delivery wide outside off, slower one. Buttler threw his hands at it and flat batted it straight to Overton at mid-off who took a sharp catch. Scott Currie came out to bat next. Gregory survived a scare as Warner and Williamson left it for each other and the ball landed in between. Gleeson was the unlucky bowler.

Overton eventually got rid of Gregory for 10 off 5 balls with a maximum to his name. Overton banged it short into the wicket around off slower ball, Gregory went back and across to mistime the pull shot high in the air. Pope at deep midwicket took a comfortable catch. Noor Ahmad came out to bat and wore a brute from Overton into his helmet as the ball went to the fence for four leg byes.

Currie finished the innings with a flourish as he hit Overton for a boundary down the ground as Manchester Originals finished with 163/6 in 100 balls. Currie remained unbeaten on 6 off 3 balls while Noor remained unbeaten on 1 off 2 balls. 14 extras given by the fielding side.

Olly Stone picked up 2 wickets in his 2/27 in 20 balls. Jamie Overton bowled well for his 2/26 in 20 balls. Richard Gleeson picked up a wicket in his 1/37 in 20 balls. Jafer Chohan finished with 1/36 in 20 balls. Liam Dawson was wicketless in his 0/32 in 20 balls. It meant London Spirit needed 164 to win to win their second game in 3 matches.

Josh Tongue’s 3-wicket haul outshines David Warner’s 71 as Originals pull off a close win

David Warner and Kane Williamson came out to bat for London Spirit while Sonny Baker had ball in his hand for Originals. Baker started with a maiden to Warner. Baker continued for another set and gave away only 4 runs. Josh Tongue came onto bowl next and Warner finally broke the shackles by hitting a boundary and maximum off consecutive balls. Scott Currie came into the attack Warner hit him for a boundary as he was looking good out there.

Tongue bowled the final set of powerplay and kept things quiet as London Spirit at the end of 25 balls of powerplay were 23/0. Lewis Gregory was introduced after the powerplay and Warner welcomed him with two consecutive boundaries. Warner survived a close run out chance as he was back in his crease on time. Noor Ahmad came into the attack as Warner greeted him with a boundary as well. Kane Williamson finally got into the act hitting Noor for a boundary while Warner showed innovation to get another boundary.

Farhan Ahmed was introduced and greeted by David Warner with a boundary playing the switch hit. The 50 came up and of the partnership between Warner and Williamson. Williamson too hit a boundary over extra cover. Currie bowled a decent set. Warner hit Gregory for two consecutive boundaries to get to his fifty in 35 balls. After 50 balls at the halfway stage of the chase, London Spirit were 73/0 and required 91 runs off the back 50 balls with 10 wickets in hand.

Noor bowled a decent set to push the required rate upwards for the batting side. Josh Tongue finally provided the breakthrough getting rid of captain Kane Williamson for 19 off 20 balls with 2 boundaries to his name. Tongue bowled it slow and short outside off, Williamson walked across to pull but he mistimed it totally to deep backward square leg where Mark Chapman takes a simple catch. Jamie Smith came out to bat and got off the mark straightaway.

Warner once again hit Tongue for a boundary through backward point. Noor bowled another tidy set. Baker bowled a few wides but did not concede a boundary in his set. Jamie Smith got into the act as he launched a maximum off Scott Currie as the 100 came up in 72 balls. But Currie hit back getting rid of Smith for 12 off 9 balls with a maximum to his name. Currie bowled it full and angling into the stumps, Smith wanted to flick but he missed as the ball went and struck his pad. Huge appeal and the finger was raised. Ashton Turner came out to bat next.

Warner hit Currie for a boundary through mid-off as London Spirit were 106/2 in 75 balls. The equation boiled down to 58 runs off 25 balls. Turner finally connected one off Noor and hit him for a maximum to keep the batting side in the contest. Turner hit Gregory for a boundary before going off strike before Warner hit him over the bowler’s head for a boundary. Gregory bowled a wide as well. London Spirit now needed 38 off 15 balls.

Josh Tongue came back to bowl his final set and delivered the hammer blow as he dismissed David Warner for 71 off 51 balls with 12 fours and a maximum to his name. Tongue bowled it full and angling down leg from around the wicket, Warner got down on one knee and attempted to help it over fine leg. But he managed only a feather through to Buttler who did the rest. Sean Dickson came out to bat next.

Tongue got another wicket to end his spell as he got rid of Dickson for 2 off 3 balls. Short and quick from the bowler, Dickson didn’t expect it and got late on the pull shot. The ball pops up off the glove to Jos Buttler who took an easy catch. Jamie Overton came to the crease and got off the mark straightaway with a boundary. 30 was needed off 10 balls. Sonny Baker came back and dismissed Ashton Turner for 13 off 7 balls with a boundary and six to his name.

Baker bowled it short quick angling in from over the wicket. Turner looked to pull but he top edged it to mid-on where Lewis Gregory took a straightforward catch. Ollie Pope came into bat next and got off the mark while Jamie Overton launched Baker over deep backward square leg for the maximum. Overton also hit a boundary off Baker thanks to a misfielding at extra cover.

Overton hit a boundary off Currie to start the final set. But he got run out while trying to take the second run as Mark Chapman did well at deep backward square leg and threw it to Buttler to whip off the bails. Overton fell for 19 off 7 balls with 3 fours and a six to his name. Liam Dawson came in next as runs came via wides and singles. London Spirit finished with 153/6 in 100 balls falling short by 10 runs. Pope was 2* and Liam Dawson 1*. 14 extras given by the fielding side.

Josh Tongue was the pick of the bowlers for Manchester Originals finishing with 3/29 in 20 balls. Sonny Baker finished with 1/21 in 20 balls. Scott Currie chipped in with 1/26 in 20 balls and there was a run out in the innings. Noor Ahmad bowled well for his 0/28 in 20 balls. The Originals did the job as Sonny Baker was awarded the Player of the Match award. With this win, Manchester Originals climbed up to 6th in the points table with 4 points from 3 games behind London Spirit who are in 5th place with 4 points from 3 games as well. Net Run Rate separating them.

What Lies Ahead

The bandwagon moves to Edgbaston in Birmingham where Birmingham Phoenix still searching for a win after 2 games host the defending champions Oval Invincibles who have won both their games easily. Two teams with contrasting fortunes face against each other.

Can the home side get their first win and inflict a defeat on the defending champions? Only time will tell as the match is set to start at 11PM IST. Hope for another close game as Hundred 2025 heats up with every passing day.
