ENG vs IND: Can India Get The Lead Past 300 & Give Themselves Chance To Square Test Series?

India and England are involved in a fierce battle in the fifth and final Test at the Oval in London. On a bowler-friendly pitch, both of them have traded blows and has kept the match in the balance after the first two days. India lost another toss and had to bat under testing conditions. They could muster only 224 runs with the last 4 wickets falling for 20 runs in the first 30 minutes of the day.

England came out all guns blazing and scored at more than 7 runs an over for the first 10-15 overs as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 92 for the first wicket inside 13 overs. But the Indian bowlers brought their team back in the game keeping England down to 247/9 with Chris Woakes unable to bat and conceding a lead of 23 runs. India have lost KL Rahul early and Sai Sudharsan as well, but Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 51* off 49 balls and has Akash Deep for company as India closed the day at 75/2 with a lead of 52 runs.

The question now is how much lead will be challenging for England when they come out to chase. Looking at the pitch plus the reputation of England in the chase, any lead below 300 will be England’s game. So, India will have to bat really well in the third innings and the third day of the Test match to get the lead close to 300 runs and even beyond to give their bowlers a chance in the game. The question is can they do it to give themselves a chance to square the series.

Can India take their Lead Past 300 and square the series?

The big question in everyone’s mind is can India take the lead close to and past 300 because that is what will be needed to challenge England who are known to chase down big totals. We know that the pitch conditions isn’t going to get easier and so batting 4th will be tough but England play in a different way and so against them a target of 200-250 will not be enough. The lead has to go to 300 if not beyond.

There will be help for the bowlers on Day 3 morning session and England will be fired up despite being a bowler down in Chris Woakes. Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton will be up for the challenge to trouble India. For India to be successful, they need to weather the storm initially for an hour or so and make the bowlers tired. Because if these three bowlers become tired, England will be forced to go to part-time spinners in Jacob Bethell and Joe Root. That is when India can cash in and score runs, but first negotiating the first hour and maybe a session will be important.

India has to perform as a unit if they are to get to this lead of 300 and more. They cannot depend on one or two individuals to get the lead to 300. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the in batter and he will be expected to convert this fifty into a hundred to push India forward. Akash Deep is the night watchman so, he might fall cheaply on Day 3. All eyes will be on Shubman Gill the captain as to how he performs when the game is on the line. He has been in stellar form in the series and world records up for grabs, but his focus should be on leading from the front with the game on the line.

Others like Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar have to contribute and support Jaiswal and Gill if India are to put substantial runs on the board. It has to be a collective performance. The series is on the line and India has to make the moves and push for a win than England as the visitors trail 1-2 in the series. If the lead goes to 300 and above, it will be tough for England and then it will be up to the Indian bowlers to do the magic.

Successful Run Chases at the Oval Batting 4th.

To put things into perspective, the highest successful run chase at the Oval is 263 runs which was achieved by England against Australia in 1902 as the hosts won the contest by 1 wicket. West Indies achieved a target of 253 runs in 1963 winning by 8 wickets while most recently, Sri Lanka beat England chasing down 219 with 8 wickets in hand in 2024 which was last summer. A total of 300+ has never been chased down at this venue.

India would like to take inspiration from the 2021 Test at the Oval where they were behind by 99 runs but came storming back due to Rohit Sharma’s majestic ton to set England 368 for the win and under the inspirational leadership of Virat Kohli they won the Test match by 157 runs. England were 100/0 at one stage in that game and fell away for 210 after that.

Taking all figures and conditions into consideration, we feel that a target of 300 or more will challenge England under these conditions and then it will be up to the bowlers of India to see whether they can defend the score. England are known to break records and they will fancy any target to chase down even if it is 300+. But their bowlers will try and restrict India and skittle them out for a low score.

What Lies Ahead.

The moving day i.e. Day 3 could be the most important and deciding day of the series. India currently have a lead of 52 runs with 8 wickets in hand against 10-man England who will miss the services of their all-rounder Chris Woakes for the remainder of the Test. It sounds cliche, but the first session will be crucial for both sides. India has to weather the storm while England will look to make further inroads and peg India back.

Which team will dig deep and grab the Test match by the scrub of their necks? Will India manage put substantial total to make it 2-2 or will England run away with it and win it 3-1? Day 3 will have some of the answers for all of us.
