ENG vs IND: Former India Coach’s Big Claim Sparks Debate On Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma

In a striking prelude to the much-anticipated Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma ENG vs IND 2025 Test series, a former India coach has suggested that the senior duo might be motivated by personal milestones or external factors. As India gears up for the 1st Test against England, this unexpected statement has reignited discussions around the roles and drive of veterans in the squad.

“Maybe They Are Motivated”: Ex-Coach’s Comment on Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma ENG vs IND 2025 Test Series

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid’s cryptic statement implied that senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could be driven by more than just team goals. While not directly questioning their commitment, he hinted that such stars “maybe are motivated” due to upcoming major series or their legacy aspirations. The timing of this comment—right before the opener in the England series—has added fuel to media speculation and fan debates.

While both Kohli and Sharma remain crucial to India’s batting lineup, their form and intent will be under intense scrutiny as they step into a defining overseas series. Their experience is expected to be pivotal against England’s pace attack, especially in seaming conditions.

Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has suggested that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might have lacked the motivation to continue in the Test format leading up to the England series. India is set to begin a five-match Test series against England, with the opening game scheduled at Leeds on Friday, June 20.

Both Kohli and Rohit had announced their retirement from Test cricket in May, following underwhelming performances in India’s previous tour of Australia. The veteran duo also failed to make an impact in the preceding home series against New Zealand, where India faced disappointing 0-3 and 1-3 defeats against the Kiwis and Aussies, respectively.

Reflecting on their retirements in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Mhambrey shared his thoughts on the timing and context behind their decisions.

“Virat didn’t have five years of test cricket left in him. You knew that, right? Their individual battles that they fought, they must have realised that it was time. They always say how valuable they could be in their contribution. And sometimes, it’s the motivation bit. Maybe they were not as motivated to play that format.”

As the countdown to the ENG vs IND 2025 1st Test begins, the spotlight remains firmly on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Whether Dravid’s remark was a subtle nudge or a tactical statement, it has surely stirred anticipation. For Indian cricket fans, the bigger hope is that the duo lets their bat do the talking—silencing critics and leading India to victory.
