The former Indian cricketer AKA popular commentator Sanjay Manjerkar feel dissatisfied for the newly 18 members squad selection test series against England. However, the selection was pretty much unexpected with the absence of Sarfaraz Khan.
While Subhman Gill was chosen as Captain. After nearly eight years later, Indian fans able to see Sai Sudarshan and Arshdeep Singh in the playground once again. Players like Sarfaraz Khan got the axe from the Indian test series against England. However, Karun Nair, on the other side, got selected.
Sanjay Manjrekar alleges bias in squad selection
Sanjay Manjrekar wrote in his column for Hindustan Times & showed his disapproval on BCCI’s decision, criticizing head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI selector Ajit Agarkar. Sanjay Manjrekar feels that if Rohit Sharma-Ravi Sashtri-Rahul Dravid were present, they would have trusted their intuition over players’ achievements.
“Under Gambhir’s stewardship and with Rohit not there anymore, I see a tendency in this management to pre-empt performances of individuals while making selections. As in, the dominating thought here is to apply their own view of the likely success and failure of players depending on conditions and opposition,” Manjerkar wrote in his interview.
Sanjay Manjrekar launches attack on selection panel
According to the present commentator, Manjerkar got pretty much upset as many proficient players like Mohammad Sami especially Sarfaraz Khan, were disqualified. Whereas, Indian batter Kunal Nair after seven years, can be seen in test ground.
“Take the example of Sarfaraz Khan. Three fifties and a 150 at home in four Tests and failures in only four innings after that and Sarfaraz does not get a single game in Australia. For the England tour too, he has been left out despite his performances in recent times outweighing Karun Nair’s completely,” said Sanjay Manjrekar.
“So, this non-selection is not about performance, it’s about someone important in the leadership group thinking Sarfaraz will not get runs in England and Australia, and Karun Nair will,” he added.
Mysterious selection by the selection panel
Manjerkar’s observation over Nair vs Khan was quite questionable. Looking into test history of both players, Krunal Nair, collecting 863 runs in nine matches in the Ranji trophy repeatedly. Apart from taking the title, the highest run chaser for Vijay Hazare Trophy with 779 runs, in this ongoing IPL season, he accumulated 89 runs for Delhi Capitals.
Sarfaraz Khan, on the other hand, has gone through some fitness issues. Regardless of his 10 kilos weight lose and worked on his fitness, Sarfaraz got disqualified from the recent 18-member squad India test match against England. However, Sarfaraz performed in warm match in November. Now, whether Sanjay Manjerkar’s remark justifies or not. Indian fan can watch in the upcoming test match against England on 20th June at 3.30 pm.
