ENG vs IND: Ravindra Jadeja Keen To Lead India In Test Cricket

The blockbuster Test series between India & England embarks on a new chapter for Indian cricket. Ravindra Jadeja, the veteran all-rounder, is the only senior player in the squad after the sudden retirement of Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma. Ravindra Jadeja during the 2021-22 Test series had amassed 160 runs in 7 innings and took 6 wickets in 4 matches.

The Test series beginning from 20th June promises to be full of young blood (*Indian players) & highly skilled & veteran (England players). England had squared the series by 2-2 in 2021-22 as the 5th Test match was completed in 2022 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in Indian dressing room.

MS Dhoni’s thinking is very simple- Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja was having an interaction with Ravichandran Ashwin on his You Tube channel. Ravindra Jadeja pointed out that leading the side in Test cricket is very different from IPL or T20s. The star-studded all-rounder stated that if given opportunity by the selection panel, he won’t hesitate to lead the side.

“Yes, definitely! Over the years, I have played under different captains. I know the mindset of every single captain whom I have played under and I also understand what players need and their mindset,” said Ravindra Jadeja

“Every captain has a different mindset on how he wants to run the team. I have played under MS Dhoni in every format and his thinking is very simple. If he feels that a batter can hit shots in a particular region, he keeps the fielder there to make the batter uncomfortable,” he stated.

“In Test cricket, you have to change two or three fielders as per the need of the bowler and you don’t need to change the field as per the batsmen. Captaincy in Test cricket is way more different. It’s simple, but calculative. It’s not complicated like IPL or T20s, where every ball is an event,” he added.

Critical England Tests for India

The baton has been passed to Shubman Gill as the selectors strongly believe that he can take India to greater heights. Under Gautam Gambhir’s tenure, India failed to qualify for the ICC WTC 2023-25 final after getting thrashed by New Zealand & Australia. The duo of Gambhir & Gill have an arduous task in front of them as the conditions in England change drastically within a fraction of a second.
India needs to carefully manage the workload of Jasprit Bumrah. During the 2021-22 Test series, Bumrah had taken 18 scalps in 4 matches, which included a 5-wicket haul. The absence of Mohammed Shami is also a huge blow, but at the same time, Shardul Thakur can be the danger man who has taken 7 wickets in 2 matches & scored 117 runs in 2021-22.
It is often said that beating England in England is considered one of the iconic achievements & the world recognizes. India did that in 2007 under the leadership of 2007 by winning 3 match series by 1-0. Can Shubman Gill & Gautam Gambhir take a leaf out of it or play their natural game and win 2025 Test series? Only time will tell but as of now India looks a formidable team on paper.
