Australia women team captain, Alyssa Healy said, she could, for instance, feel some massive disturbance in the Delhi Capitals (DC) camp during the course of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise recently relieved Ricky Ponting of his head coach duties and there are lots of questions marks over the entire coaching staff.
Ganguly in the Frame: DC’s Next Coach in Waiting, But Uncertainty Lingers
Kolkata Knight Riders former captain, Sourav Ganguly is the director of cricket at DC and has shown interest in a sear for Ponting’s position. However, up to the present, there is still none that provides a clear cut on the same.
Ricky Ponting was appointed as head coach in 2018 and was part of the restructuring of the franchise element as well. His reign recorded improved success as compared to other team’s performances in the same competition. Delhi reached the playoffs for three consecutive years starting the season of 2019 and reached the final for the first time in the season 2020.
But since the formation of Ligue 1 last year, they have not qualify for the knock out round, and competed in the ninth Ligue 1 in 2023.
“Being over there in India this year, watching it live, from an Indian perspective, it just didn’t seem right in the dugout. There was obviously a bit going on, there was tension between support staff, and maybe the players. Rishabh Pant was in-charge and looked quite relaxed… but it just didn’t look right,” Healy said on LiSTNR Sport.
“It wasn’t a surprise to me that if you put an international coach against an Indian icon, the international coach would probably part ways,” Healy added.
Ponting’s Path to India’s Hotseat Dashed: Travel Demands Scuppered Head Coach Role
IPL is involved in this report where, according to reports, Ponting was favored to become the head coach of Team India considering Rahul Dravid was preparing for his exit. Nevertheless, he declined following the advertisement because of the travels and the assignments the job entailed.
He is not associated with the DC now but he still remains part of the coaching team of the Washington Freedom in MLC.
“But yeah, it’s opened up a whole avenue for Ricky to look at. Will he coach an international side or stick to franchise cricket, or do whatever else he wants to do, it has opened up for him,” Healy said.
