With a stunning 42-ball 101 that included nine sixes and 2/18 from three overs, Will Jacks might soon be given the keys to Centurion. On Thursday night, the superstar player for the Pretoria Capitals led his side to their first victory of the Season with an incredible all-around effort.

Pitch Report

The batters in this game found a lot to enjoy on the surface at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, as it was a batting-friendly pitch for tonight’s game.

In T20 matches played here, the first innings average score was 193 runs, so because of that, Wayne Parnell, captain of the Pretoria Capitals, won the toss and decided to put some runs on the board.

Will Jacks gave a fiery start to the team in the powerplay

Opening batsman Will Jacks gave the Durban SuperGiants a scare as he went on a one-man show as the Capitals chose to bat. He first dominated Phil Salt (23) in a 75-run opening partnership, and he persisted in attacking even as the Capitals collapsed on the other end.

Jacks was removed in the 13th over of the Capitals innings after a strong display that saw him score 101 of the 151 runs the Capitals scored. After then, even though the Capitals lost momentum in the latter stages of the game, Colin Ingram’s 43-point cameo helped them take the upper hand.

Reece Topley bowling at the death made a comeback for the Super Giants

When Will Jacks was smashing the ball around Centurion, which he later acknowledged is “probably my favorite ground to bat on,” the Capitals looked to be headed for a total of more than 230, but DSG mounted a valiant comeback during the final overs.

Reece Topley (3/34) struck a stunning double-wicket maiden off in the penultimate over to help restrict the damage as the visitors captured five wickets for nine runs towards the end of the first innings. Topley had good support in the back end of the innings from Junior Dala (2/32), while all the other bowlers took one wicket each.

The DSG run chase lost momentum after wickets kept falling at regular intervals

After sending West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers back to the pavilion and then taking a major wicket of the in-form Heinrich Klaasen, the night clearly belonged to the Will Jacks.

Quinton de Kock, who arrived at No. 3, and Matthew Breetzke (33 off 24 balls) tried to keep the momentum going, but both were caught on the boundary by Corbin Bosch due to the pressure of the scoreboard.

After a lengthy journey from Australia, DSG newcomer Marcus Stoinis, who took Nicholas Pooran’s place, showed no signs of fatigue by hitting successive sixes off Jimmy Neesham.

However, he could not sustain the momentum as he was caught on the boundary by the very next ball. With an unbeaten 25, DSG skipper Keshav Maharaj made a heroic effort, but in the end, the run rate proved to be too high.

Will Jacks shines with his bowling too

Will Jacks wasn’t done with the bat, as he went on to use his clean off-spinners to begin the Capitals bowling attack. Returning Capitals skipper Wayne Parnell’s decision to give Jacks the new ball proved to be a brilliant one as he delivered figures of 2/18 from three overs to limit DSG to 187/7.

Jacks received strong backing from seam bowlers Hardus Viljoen (2/39) and Parnell (2/54). James Neesham maintained composure to get his team over the finish line despite the Pretoria Capitals nearly making a mess of things with the ball on the back end as well.

After yet another thrilling and high-scoring match in the SA20 2024, the host team, the Pretoria Capitals, will be greatly relieved to have finally secured their first victory of the season. Conversely, Paarl Royals remain the only unbeaten team in the competition when Durban’s Super Giants lose their first match.
