On Friday, England’s assistant coach Jeetan Patel acknowledged that his bowlers had a difficult day at work against an array of Indian batters who are skilled at constantly exerting pressure on the opposition. The three-pronged spin assault of the visitors was praised by Jeetan Patel for their efforts on Day 2 of the first Test.

The former cricket player for New Zealand expressed his optimism that things will improve and expressed pride in the ability to generate possibilities.

Team India trailed by 127 runs at the beginning of the day, but at Stumps, they jumped ahead by 175 runs. After 73 overs of labor, England’s three front-line spinners could claim just four wickets between them. Joe Root got two wickets in 24 overs as well.

“Proud at the way we kept coming ball after ball” – Jeetan Patel lauds England bowlers

In an interview with Sky Sports, Jeetan Patel said that while Indian batters did well, English batsmen were a little unlucky.

“It was a tough day for us. The guys put in a fantastic effort. It would have been nice if a few opportunities went our way but India batted really well, they put on some great partnerships. But we are really proud at the way we kept coming ball after ball and creating opportunities. At some point things turn for you and we just have to keep on going,” he elaborated.

On the first day of the Test, Hartley was welcomed with two sixes in his opening over by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul have been dismissed by Hartley, who presently has figures of 25-0-131-2. Jeetan Patel also gave Tom Hartley his full support, encouraging him to overcome his obstacles.

“Hartley has created opportunities and taken a couple of wickets. It would have been nice for him to have taken some more, but it is the way the game is at the moment. His time will come. Root started with a great wicket, we talked about how we were going to get into the game early. Then it was about short spells because Leach has that knee issue so we have to be careful with everyone else. You can’t just have one guy bowling 40 overs,” he reflected.

He would have been our guy to bowl all those overs- Jeetan Patel on Jack Leach

Patel also mentioned how much they missed Jack Leach’s contributions and gave an explanation about his knee issues.

“Jack Leach bumped his knee yesterday and he bumped it again today. He would have been our guy to bowl all those overs. It’s a shame for him as he was not able to move as good as he could have. He actually bowled really well considering,” he said.

India currently has a 175-runs lead, so England will need to bat extremely well in the second innings.
