IPL 2025: Can LSG Overcome Injuries & Venue Uncertainty?

The IPL 2025 season was disrupted by a one-week suspension on May 9, 2025, due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The league will resume on May 17, with matches restricted to six cities: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.

For Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), this ensures that their home matches at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow will proceed as scheduled, providing a familiar environment for their passionate fanbase. Their away match against Gujarat Titans will be played in Ahmedabad, a venue known for its batting-friendly conditions.

However, the uncertainty surrounding playoff venues poses a strategic challenge. Initially, the playoffs were set to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata, with Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator in Hyderabad on May 20 and 21, respectively, and Qualifier 2 and the final in Kolkata on May 23 and 25.

The suspension has delayed these plans, and the BCCI has revised the playoff schedule to Qualifier 1 on May 29, Eliminator on May 30, Qualifier 2 on June 1, and the final on June 3, with venues yet to be confirmed (IPL 2025 Revised Schedule). This lack of clarity could impact LSG’s preparations if they qualify, as different venues offer varying pitch conditions and crowd dynamics. For instance, a spin-friendly pitch in Jaipur or a high-scoring one in Mumbai would require different tactical approaches.

Remaining Matches and Top-Two Prospects

As of May 15, 2025, LSG has played 11 matches, securing 5 wins and 6 losses, resulting in 10 points and a net run rate (NRR) of -0.469 (IPL 2025 Points Table). They are currently seventh in the points table, trailing the top four teams: Gujarat Titans (16 points, NRR 0.793), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (16 points, NRR 0.482), Punjab Kings (15 points, NRR 0.376), and Mumbai Indians (14 points, NRR 1.156). LSG’s remaining fixtures are crucial, as they face three challenging opponents:

Opponent Date Venue
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) May 19, 2025 Lucknow
Gujarat Titans (GT) May 22, 2025 Ahmedabad
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) May 27, 2025 Lucknow

These matches, detailed in the revised schedule (LSG Revised Schedule), pit LSG against teams with varying strengths. SRH, currently eighth with 7 points, has struggled but remains dangerous with their batting firepower. GT, the table-toppers, have been consistent, while RCB is riding a wave of momentum with recent wins.

LSG’s earlier performances, such as a thrilling two-run victory over Rajasthan Royals on April 19, demonstrate their potential to upset stronger teams, but their recent form—losing three of their last four matches—raises concerns.

To finish in the top two, LSG must win all three remaining matches, which would give them 16 points, tying them with GT and RCB. However, their NRR of -0.469 is a significant disadvantage compared to GT’s 0.793 and RCB’s 0.482. Even with three convincing victories, improving their NRR to surpass these teams would require extraordinarily large margins of victory, which is unlikely given the strength of their opponents.

Additionally, GT and RCB have their own remaining matches—GT against Delhi Capitals, LSG, and Chennai Super Kings, and RCB against Kolkata Knight Riders, SRH, and LSG—which could further solidify their positions or improve their NRR.

The IPL 2025 format, with 10 teams split into two groups, allows the top four teams to advance to the playoffs, with the top two earning a direct shot at the final via Qualifier 1. LSG’s current seventh-place standing means that a top-four finish is a more realistic goal than a top-two spot.

If they win all three matches, they could reach 16 points, potentially overtaking Mumbai Indians (14 points) or Delhi Capitals (13 points), depending on other results. However, their NRR and the need for other teams to falter make even a playoff spot challenging.

Strategic Considerations and Outlook

LSG’s high-risk batting strategy, centered on Pant and Pooran, has produced moments of brilliance but also inconsistency, as seen in their 7th-place finish in 2024 after playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023. Their domestic bowling unit, while talented, has struggled under pressure, particularly with the current injury crisis.

The addition of Shardul Thakur provides a boost, but the team must quickly find the right combination to maximize their chances. Leveraging their home advantage in Lucknow, where the Ekana Stadium’s pitch often favors spinners like Bishnoi, will be crucial. Pant’s leadership will be pivotal in rallying the team, especially against formidable opponents like GT and RCB.

The uncertainty over playoff venues adds another layer of complexity. If LSG qualifies, they may face pitches that differ significantly from their home ground, requiring quick adaptation. For instance, a spin-friendly pitch in Jaipur or a batting paradise in Mumbai could test their bowling or batting depth, respectively.

The team’s ability to adjust their game plan—perhaps by relying more on all-rounders like Abdul Samad in unfamiliar conditions—will be critical.
