IPL 2024: “MS Dhoni will definitely look to have different bowlers away from home”- Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in the Chennai Super Kings’ bowling lineup for the upcoming IPL 2024 season
Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted the strength of the Chennai Super Kings’ bowling attack for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. He emphasized that MS Dhoni, the captain of CSK, has a variety of options available to him to adjust the team’s bowling lineup according to the match conditions.
While the Chennai Super Kings typically depend on their spinners to perform well in home conditions, they will need their seamers to step up on pitches that are more conducive to batting, particularly when playing away matches.
When questioned about the bowling lineup of the Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2024 during a panel discussion on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar shared his insights.
This is a very good bowling attack. MS Dhoni has the options. I don’t think they need to worry so much about the bowling but MS Dhoni will definitely look to have different bowlers away from home.
“His attack at home on Chennai pitches will be different and maybe the odd change for the pitches in Mumbai, Kolkata or Mohali, which will help a little bit of the seam bowlers,” the former India opener added.
Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the presence of Deepak Chahar as a key asset for the Chennai Super Kings’ bowling lineup. He added,
Deepak Chahar gets you wickets at the start virtually every single time. He bowls three overs. That’s exactly what MS Dhoni’s plan is, give him three overs and bring him again for the fourth over maybe.”
Chahar’s impressive performance in the IPL 2023 season, where he claimed 13 wickets at a reasonable economy rate of 8.73 in 10 matches, positions him well for potential consideration in India’s T20 World Cup squad if he maintains his form in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

Sunil Gavaskar highlighted that the Chennai Super Kings possess a variety of other seam-bowling options in addition to Deepak Chahar. He said,

Mukesh Choudhary hasn’t quite come through but he is a fine talent and then either Matheesha Pathirana or Mustafizur Rahman, as Irfan Pathan said, towards the end. Tushar Deshpande came very good the last time around. He was a bit expensive but he was taking wickets at the same time.”
Sunil Gavaskar also noted that while Ravindra Jadeja provides a formidable spin-bowling option for the Chennai Super Kings, Daryl Mitchell could also contribute with a few overs.
So I think, this time around, he will probably be a little more experienced and maybe concede a lot less runs but still keep getting wickets. Not to forget, Jadeja will come in and bowl a few overs. It could be a Daryl Mitchell coming and bowling a few overs,” Gavaskar stated.
In IPL 2023, Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja emerged as Chennai Super Kings’ most successful bowlers, claiming 21 and 20 wickets, respectively. Matheesha Pathirana contributed with 19 wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana picked up 11 dismissals, aside from Deepak Chahar, who also played a significant role with the ball.
