ICC World Test Championship Final ends in dismay as India fell short of winning an ICC trophy. Many debates and discussions are been made about the plans that should have been undertaken and what could have been implemented by the Indian team ahead of the ICC WTC finals. Amidst the chaos, Sourav Ganguly confessed that it was not the board (BCCI) that ousted Virat Kohli from captaincy but it was his sole decision.

Virat Kohli’s reign of captaincy came to an end in 2021 after he was removed as skipper of the ODI side. Kohli was crowned as a captain after the legendary MS Dhoni announced his decision to step down as T20 captain after the T20 World Cup in Dubai following which Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI stripped him of ODI captaincy in December later that year. Thus, speculations mount that there are conflicts and feuds between Kohli and Ganguly, due to the captaincy issue. In IPL 2023, a major issue was made when both Ganguly and Kohli forgo the gesture of shaking hands with each other after the game.

Sourav Ganguly opined that Rohit Sharma was the suitable captain for all the formats after Virat Kohli step down from the captaincy. He Stated while talking to a reporter on Aaj Tak:

“No (on the board’s preparedness on Kohli giving up Test captaincy). Not after the South Africa series. I don’t know (why he did so), only he can tell. After Virat left, Rohit was the best option available at that time,”

“Kohli was a very good captain, India did really well under Kohli & Shastri, India played with a fearless attitude and showed guts in England and Australia. If they had played the Manchester Test at that time, they would’ve won the series in England as well,” he added.

BCCI Appointed Rohit Sharma As Captain To Replace Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma as a captain of India’s ODI and T20 teams. Kohli, however also decided to relinquish his Test Captaincy after India’s 1-2 defeat to South Africa in January 2022.

Rohit Sharma has been a successful captain so far he has achieved the feat by winning his 31st T20 of the skipper of the team in his 37th outing, the match that held against Hong Kong. Kohli has achieved 30 wins from his 50 matches as the India captain. The man leading the list at the moment is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has helped India win 41 T20I matches under his captaincy from 72 matches.

Although, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has failed to Clinch an ICC World Test Championship trophy for India, they both successfully took their teams to the final, which is a testament to their accomplishment as a captain. The last ICC title India won was under MS Dhoni in 2013, though India has reached many finals but fell short of winning the trophies.
