The much awaited ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner as this time 20 teams are going to compete for the trophy. There is a lot of hype around Australian side as Mitchell Marsh is expected to lead the side. Mitchell Marsh has got brute power and now has become permanent member of the Australian side across all the 3 formats of the game.
Australia though can’t afford to get complacent even if they have a lot of match winners as it takes an over or two to change the complexion of the match. The star batter David Warner would be aiming to finish his T20I career on a high note as the batter’s form would be quite pivotal on the sluggish tracks at Caribbean. We should not forget that Aussies made it to the finals of T20 WC 2010 when the tournament was in West Indies.
Mitchell Marsh is certainly a leader- Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting was having an interaction with ‘ICC Review’. Ricky Ponting recalled how the former head coach Justin Langer had named Mitchell Marsh & Travis Head as the joint vice-captains of the Test team. Ricky Ponting was quite confident that Mitchell Marsh will lead the side in the upcoming ICC T20 WC 2024 and said that he has the backing of the selection panel.
“He’s (Marsh) certainly a leader of men, which hasn’t only been just the last few months. I remember, five or six years ago when Justin Langer took over as the coach of the Australian team, he actually named Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head as joint vice-captains of the Test team. So leadership has always been in the back of the selectors’ minds as far as Mitchell Marsh is concerned,” said Ricky Ponting.
Steep challenge awaits Australia
Australia may be red hot favorites to win the championship but deep down the line, their middle order doesn’t look threatening especially against the spinners. We must admit the fact that in Caribbean, the wickets would be slow which would test the character and patience of the batters.
It won’t be wrong to say that this is the Australian era which we are experiencing and going through. The Aussies led by former skipper Aaron Finch had won ICC T20 WC 2021 against all odds and everyone’s expectations and then won the two back to back tourneys in the form of ICC WTC 2021-23 & ODI WC 2023 under the leadership of Pat Cummins. Undoubtedly this Australian sounds invincible and unstoppable and only time will tell whether they can continue their golden run in T20 WC 2024.
