Hundred 2024 : Harry Brook Leads Superchargers To Third Win In A Row As Originals Fluff Chase

Superchargers skipper, Harry Brook led from the front with a scintillating 58 off just 33 balls, as the Superchargers managed to fend off an Originals onslaught by the openers winning by 14 runs. Northern Superchargers made it two wins from two over Manchester Originals in the northern derbies at Headingly in the Hundred on Sunday. Harry Brook‘s side beat the team from the other side of the Pennines by 14 runs to follow success for Hollie Armitage’s team earlier in the day.

Harry Brook led  Superchargers  have picked up momentum – Stokes will be available for them for the next four games and that augurs really well for them. Meanwhile, the struggle continues for the Originals – they have lost their four opening games and things are looking gloomy for them.

Pitch and Toss

The Headingly pitch offers great assistance to batters with substantial bounce as the ball comes onto the bat nicely. Moreover, the fast outfield makes things easier for the batters to exude confidence in shot-making. The weather will be overcast with slight chances of rain.

Manchester Originals skipper Phil Salt won the toss and chose to bowl with one change including an extra batter to the squad. Northern Superchargers skipper Harry Brook batting first made couple of changes to the squad

Harry Brooks blistering 58 guided Northern Superchargers to 167 for 5

Originals won the toss and chose to bowl, which looked a great choice with rain falling before the start of the match and thick clouds overhead. Unsurprisingly then, Superchargers got off to a slow start with the bat, as Fazalhaq Farooqi took a wicket with the very first ball of the match.

Graham Clark and captain Harry Brook rebuilt the innings with a well-paced 50 partnership. Brook went on to score an explosive 58 off 33, before being caught out by Scott Currie low to the ground at mid-off. After a strong middle to the home side’s innings, Originals came back strongly at the end to restrict Superchargers to 167 for 5.

Put in to bat Farooqi dismissed Ollie Robinson, promoted to the top, first ball in front of the stumps. Nicholas Pooran top-edged a full delivery playing across the line, with Paul Walter taking the skier of his own bowling. Harry  Brook and Graham Clark steadied the ship after a shaky start putting on a fifty partnership but the latter fell trying to up the ante, playing an inside out shot straight to long-off.

Adam Hose signaled his intent first ball, with a slog sweep over mid-wicket for six. Harry Brook took on Hartley consistently scoring two boundaries in each set against him. A rollicking 61-run partnership and a cameo by Ben Dwarshuis (20* off 9) took the Superchargers to 167 for 5.

Matthew Hurst and Phil Salts blistering start in vain as Northern Superchargers won by 14 runs

In reply, Phil Salt and Matthew Hurst got off to a flier with two boundaries in the first set signaling their intent. A 90-run partnership came to an abrupt end when Salt didn’t ground his bat nor feet while attempting to take a single. Matthew Hurst continued playing his shots but the run-out allowed the Superchargers back into the game.

The middle order imploded with no one else giving Hurst company. A double-wicket over from Santner heaped the pressure on the Originals. This led to the run-out of Matthew Hurst, as the Originals imploded yet again and stay winless having played four games.

Captain Phil Salt and Matty Hurst got Originals’ innings off to a very promising start with 90 for the opening partnership. Salt scoring 40 from 27, while the impressive Hurst top-scored with 78 from 45.

Unfortunately for the winless Originals, they then capitulated from 90 for 1 to 128 for 4 thanks to some game-turning run-outs and Mitchell Santner, who took 2 for 23. When Hurst departed, Originals required 29 from 13, but they were unable to get over the line, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table and Superchargers up into third.

Presentations and Road Ahead

Meerkat Player of the Match Harry Brook for his innings of 58 said : “I felt like they were the favourites coming out of the powerplay, but we bowled unbelievably well at the death to get the win.

“We didn’t have the batting powerplay that we wanted, but we stuck to our task. The outfield is so quick here that I didn’t feel like I needed to hit many balls in the air, so I was just trying to pierce the gaps and it worked. I was just trying to stay in until the end, so I could put pressure on them at the end. I felt good at the start and thankfully I hit a few gaps.

“We’ve always got a take-wickets mentality, but we obviously had to think about that a bit more when we didn’t get a wicket in powerplay, and they were 90 without loss. So, I tossed the ball to [Adil] Rashid and Mitch [Santner], and they did a really good job in getting some crucial wickets that helped us get the win.”

The Superchargers have handled the pressure well and have come out on top. Three wins on the trot for the hosts and they move to third position on the points table. They posted quite a big total on the board on the back of Brook’s quickfire fifty and cameos from Clark, Hose and Dwarshuis. Salt and Matthew Hurst took their side off to a flier as both of them batted fluently from the word-go.

The Originals were 90/0 around the halfway stage and were the favourites then. But, a school boy error from Salt where he took it too easy and didn’t ground his bat resulted in him being run-out.

That changed the complexion of the game as the visitors kept losing wickets at regular intervals and completely lost the plot. Kudos to the Superchargers’ bowlers as well as they kept it tight and got rewarded. Shout out to the youngster, Hurst, who scored a brilliant fifty but a smart run-out from Pooran sent him packing in the death overs. Santner and Potts were brilliant in the backend. Another game that the Originals have let slip.

The Superchargers have picked up momentum – Stokes will be available for them for the next four games and that augurs really well for them. Meanwhile, the struggle continues for the Originals – they have lost their four opening games and things are looking gloomy for them.
