Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik feels that the Indian team’s lack of character contributed to England’s victory in Sunday’s intense match in Hyderabad in addition to their perseverance and determination. Dinesh Karthik added that the fear of failing prevents India’s top-order batsmen from being free to play their natural style of cricket.

India, who had been in charge for the first three days of the Test match, appeared to lose control when Ollie Pope began to run riot over the Indian bowlers. Since then, the Indian batsmen have lost their momentum, which only persisted into the fourth day when they were outclassed by the English spinners.

This has allowed players like Tom Hartley to cause havoc with the Indians and secure a remarkable seven-for on his debut, helping England to a historic victory of 28 runs.

The fear of failure is ingrained in us – Dinesh Karthik on Indian batters

Dinesh Karthik said that since it is more of a cultural issue, the players are not to blame for it. He highlighted the way the English batsmen, in contrast, executed their shots with unrestricted freedom during the just-finished first Test match of the series in Hyderabad.

The cricket player-commentator said to Cribuzz:

“Today, for me, was a very revealing day as to how cultures differ. As we were growing up being Indians, somewhere, the fear of failure is ingrained in us. I genuinely wish all the fans who follow and observe the sport understand why sometimes it can be hard for (Indian) top-order batters to be free in their minds to play shots that they want to play. They want to as well, but the fear of failure just pulls them back a little bit.”

It’s important to remember that on Day 4, Ollie Pope, the man who lit up England’s second innings, was removed for 196. In an attempt to play the scoop, the batter was bowled. He chose the unconventional route even though he was getting close to a big milestone, which demonstrates this English side’s mentality.

They were tired and lacked body language- Dinesh Karthik on team India at the end of Day 3

Dinesh Karthik stated that the Indian players’ body language suffered greatly after England retaliated on Day 3 of the Hyderabad Test. He implied that Rohit Sharma and co. failed to exert enough pressure and allowed the contest to slip out of their control.

“A lot of India who watched this Test match got the impression that at the end of Day 3, they were tired and lacked body language. Somewhere, they had been outplayed at different points in time, but India did not have answers to a lot of the questions that England have asked,” Karthik added.

“The intensity which is required sometimes to push on those tough days, yesterday (Day 3) because of what England came up with, I think India did not have answers. The after-effect of that is what we are seeing today,” Dinesh Karthik concluded.

The second Test match of the five-match series is scheduled to start at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on February 2. India will undoubtedly be hoping to exercise their spirits and come out on top in order to win the match.
