Tim David played an explosive cameo for Australia against New Zealand, helping the visitors secure a thrilling victory on the final ball in the first T20I of the series in Wellington.

Tim David blasted 31 runs from merely 10 deliveries, leaving head coach Andrew McDonald ecstatic over the 27-year-old’s display of talent. His remarkable inning culminated in a sensational last ball where he managed to convert what was nearly a yorker from Tim Southee into a boundary towards mid-wicket.

It’s powerful hitting, it’s something different- Andrew McDonald on Tim David’s Match-winning Knock

Addressing the media, Andrew McDonald shared his thoughts on Tim David’s performance,

“It’s powerful hitting, it’s something different. We’ve seen some great death hitters over time and sometimes in opposition teams as well. It’s a scary proposition when he walks to the crease for any opposition bowlers. I think the journey and the failures along the way build the player you see out there today,”

Watching from the non-striker’s end, Australian T20I captain Mitchell Marsh praised Tim David for his skill in turning quality deliveries into boundary balls.

There’s a lot of mental strength- Andrew McDonald on Tim David

McDonald openly expressed Australia’s strong support for Tim David, acknowledging that the path of a finisher is bound to include setbacks. Despite a disappointing BBL 2023/24 season with the Hobart Hurricanes, the right-handed batsman has since managed to justify the confidence placed in him.

Speaking regarding this the Australian head coach said,

“It takes a long journey. I think any time you’re in those finishing roles, it’s littered with failure across that journey. To be able to come through and out the other side, and when you get that opportunity as well to be in those situations and then take the opportunity, there’s a lot of mental strength to it,”

Should David maintain his impressive streak into the IPL 2024 season for the Mumbai Indians, Australia might possess a valuable asset heading into the T20 World Cup scheduled for June later this year. The second T20I match between Australia and New Zealand is set for Friday, February 23, at Eden Park.
