Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, has praised David Warner, describing him as potentially the greatest all-format player for the country. McDonald emphasized David Warner‘s unmatched talent and vast experience, recognizing the significant impact he has had on Australian cricket.

David Warner has officially retired from ODI cricket and will conclude his Test career after the upcoming match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Despite initial uncertainties surrounding Warner’s position in the team, his commanding 164-run innings in the first Test against Pakistan in Perth solidified his impact.

While initially considering playing until 2027, Warner decided to retire after the Test series against Pakistan, highlighting the team’s impressive rebound in India as the ideal culmination of his illustrious career. The door remains open for Warner to potentially contribute to the 2025 Champions Trophy if Australia sees fit.

David Warner is going to be hard to replace- Australia coach Andrew McDonald

Ahead of the Sydney encounter, Andrew McDonald while speaking to cricket.com.au, praised David Warner and said that his loss will be a huge one for the Australian side.

“In time, he will probably go down…but probably at the moment as it sits, he is probably our greatest ever all-three format player. He is going to drop out of one of those formats in terms of Test match cricket. He will be a loss,” the coach stated.

Opening up on Warner’s place in the Test team being constantly under the scanner over the last couple of seasons, the 42-year-old commented:

“I know that people have been gunning for him for a period of time, but for us internally, we have seen the great value in what he brings to the table, hence why we have kept picking him. He repaid a bit of that faith in the first Test match. He’s going to be hard to replace. Someone who strikes at 70 averaging 45, and most ever runs as an Australian opener.”
