IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that the second season of WPL will be held in February. The previous edition was a huge success and unearthed several talents. The maiden edition of the tournament saw five teams battle for the title, with all of the matches played in DY Patil and Brabourne Stadiums.

With the auction for the second season just two days away, teams will be making their final strategies. With the success of the first edition, we can expect no less and experience a cracker of games in the second edition.

We will work with the franchises and see to what extent it is possible- Arun Dhumal to expand the WPL

Speaking to Sportstar ahead of the auction, Arun Dhumal has given some information about the tournament schedule and the venues.

“The WPL will be in February, so we will be checking on the venues. Once we meet, most probably during the WPL auctions, we will figure out where it makes more sense to host the tournament, given the logistical challenges and the time available. We will take a call on that,” said Arun Dhumal.

He further added,

“If it is possible to host it in a multi-city format, that would be better for the fans and the franchises, since there is a fan base. But it all depends on how much time is available and the logistical challenges,”

The Rumors circulating around have said that implementation of home and away format might not happen for this season and just one more city will be added along with the current one.

The WPL is likely to expand in the upcoming season. But the tournament clashing with the Men’s England tour of India and is followed by IPL 2024 could restrict them up to some extent.

Arun Dhumal said that the Ultimate Aim is to expand WPL throughout the country and implement the home and way format similar to IPL.

“Definitely, we would want the tournament to go through the geography of the entire country, given the diversity of our country. It’s a great opportunity for all the franchise to engage with the fans through the length and breadth of this country. There are many stadiums and would be phenomenal for fans to engage with women cricketers,” he stated.

He concluded by saying they would work with the Franchises and look at the possibilities of holding matches in their home cities.

“Now that the franchises are clear, even they would be keen on having their games in their local centres. We will work with the franchises and see to what extent it is possible to organise matches there…” he added.
