One of the best former Australian batsman Greg Chappell were amazed by India new captain Shubhman Gill captaincy against England in Headingly at Leeds on 24th June. Shubman Gill also proved himself as a good batter in the first test as he struck a ton and looked in sublime form
Greg Chappell’s magnificent remarks on Shubman Gill’s captaincy
The ex-batsman Greg Chappell was rather impressed by Subhman Gill’s captaincy in the first test despite England winning against India by five wickets in the second innings. During the first innings, India faced England 471. Nevertheless, England on last day of first test played die heartedly achieved India’s assigned target (365).
Yet, in the first Test, both the teams had played well. Indian batsman such as Yashasvi Jaiswal(101), Subhman Gill(147) and Rishabh Pant(134). But India in its first innings had displayed good performance. In the second innings, England batsmen such as Ben Ducket drew up 149 single-handedly.
On the other hand, in speaking of Shubman Gill leadership, the former Aussie cricketer said Shubman Gill has a good start as Test captain even though the result was not satisfied enough. Chappell quoted that,
“It was a terrific Test match. Sadly, India didn’t finish up on the correct side, but there were a lot of good things that they did. Shubman Gill had a great start to his career as a Test match captain. As a player, maybe the result didn’t go the right way, but conditions were probably better for him on the last day than they were at any other stage in the Test match,”
On Shubman Gill as a batter, the former said Gill has lot to learn but he as a captain showed well and will get better gradually. There are still four Tests are yet to play. He included by saying,
“So he will have learned a lot from that. The Indian think tank will have learned a lot from what happened in the Test match. He will only get better and better as a captain. Had the team taken a few more catches and, maybe, if the tail had wagged a bit stronger in both innings, the result could have been very different. But I think there are four Test matches to go. Let’s wait and see, but I think he made a very good start as captain.”
Shubman Gill on setting England a target
The new Test captain Subhman Gill after losing to England with only five wickets confessed earlier that because of their weak fielding and batting, India lost the 1st Test. But Gill was also quoted that they had the target of 430 and 435 but it was not possible. On their failure at 1st Test, Shubman Gill said that,
“We were thinking that we’re going to give [England a target of] around 430, 435 and then declare. But, unfortunately, I think our last six wickets scored around 20-25 [31] runs, which is never a good sign. But even today [Tuesday], I thought after their brilliant opening partnership, we did have our chances and just didn’t go our way in this match,”
However, the second Test against England, India will be playing at Birhimgam on July 2.
