Rassie van der Dussen has captained the Lions, Northerns, North West University, and Vancouver Knights, among other teams. He will add South Africa as an additional side to the list next week. From Thursday to Saturday at Sabina Park, Van der Dussen will captain the national team in three Twenty20 internationals against the West Indies. He will then give way to Aiden Markram to play in the T20 World Cup. Make room in every sense: neither the captain nor the second-highest runscorer in men’s T20Is this year, Van der Dussen, is included in the World Cup roster.

He is, however, the perfect example of a followable player—a serious, thoughtful cricket player who presents himself, speaks, and behaves as though he has never made a snap decision. Van der Dussen does, in fact, always attend South Africa’s mid-match on-field committee meetings. However, he has only led teams 21 times in the 612 games he has participated in since making his first-class debut in February 2008, or 4.43% of his legitimate work.

Rassie van der Dussen has represented South Africa under nine different captains. When Van der Dussen played his first international match in October 2018 in a T20I against Zimbabwe in East London, Faf du Plessis was the coach. He then proceeded to spool through the captains of Markram, JP Duminy, Keshav Maharaj, Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Temba Bavuma, and David Miller. While Van der Dussen may not be the best leader among those players, some unquestionably are. To be sure, no one who has met Van der Dussen will be surprised that he has agreed to fill in while Markram finishes off the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sincere men behave in this way.
