The built-in talent of Jake Fraser-McGurk has led former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to compare him to a young David Warner. Plus, Ricky Ponting thinks the youngster can replace the former left handed batter David Warner in the Australian Test side.
Given Jake Fraser-McGurk’s natural talent, Australia great Ricky Ponting believed him to be a Test player, likening him to a young David Warner. In order to speed up Fraser-McGurk’s development as an all-format cricket player, Ponting thinks he should be exposed to international cricket as much as possible.
Jake Fraser-McGurk lit up the Canberra crowd in the series finale against the West Indies, despite missing out on a big score on his ODI debut. Fraser-McGurk, with five fours and three sixes, blasted 41 runs off just 18 deliveries as Australia chased a paltry 87-run target.
I think he’s someone that can be well and truly fast-tracked through the Australian system- Ricky Ponting on Jake Fraser-McGurk
Cricket Australia (CA) have put together a really good squad anyway, so he’ll have to bide his time- Ricky Ponting on Fraser-McGurk missing in the T20I squad against New Zealand
Ricky Ponting feels the current Australian team is stable enough, even with Fraser-McGurk not getting a place in the T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand ahead of the T20 World Cup. Fraser-McGurk, in Ponting’s opinion, must wait for his opportunity.
“Obviously, there’s only so many people you can pick in the World Cup squad, isn’t there. I’m not saying at all that he should have been picked in the World Cup squad because they’ve put together a really good squad anyway, and one that on paper will look as good as probably any team going there. He’ll have to bide his time. But as we saw yesterday, he looks pretty keen to make the most of the opportunities that he gets,” he explained.
Prior to June’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA, Australia has six T20I matches left.
