Parthiv Patel, who played for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, had the unique experience of being led by both Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, two iconic captains with five IPL titles each. According to Patel, while both are exceptional leaders, Rohit Sharma‘s remarkable composure during tense moments distinguishes him as a captain.

Don’t remember that he made a blunder- Parthiv Patel on Rohit Sharma

In a conversation with PTI, Parthiv Patel reminisced about an IPL 2015 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where MS Dhoni’s decision to bowl Pawan Negi in the penultimate over backfired as Hardik Pandya attacked the left-arm spinner. Patel suggested that such tactical errors were rare under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

“The hallmark of Rohit’s captaincy is such that in last 10 years, you don’t remember that he made a blunder. Even Dhoni made blunders like giving Pawan Negi an over. In IPL, taking on the spot decisions is the biggest challenge and I think he (Rohit) did it well,”

Rohit Sharma has an impressive record of winning four IPL finals against teams led by MS Dhoni. Two of these victories came in thrilling fashion, with Mumbai Indians clinching the title on the final ball in the 2017 and 2019 editions. These wins highlight Rohit’s exceptional composure and ability to perform under pressure in crucial moments.

Parthiv Patel on Rohit Sharma’s ability to nurture young talents

Parthiv Patel highlighted Rohit Sharma’s reputation for nurturing and developing young talent, citing the examples of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. Patel affirmed that Rohit’s ability to back and extract the best from young players has been a key factor in their success.

“Bumrah came into the MI setup in 2014 and by 2015, his performances weren’t great. They even pondered sending him back after half the season. But Rohit Sharma believed in his abilities and from 2016 onwards, his performances have been excellent. Same with Hardik Pandya. He came in 2015 and became popular. His 2016 season wasn’t great but MI stuck to him and he became the player he is today,”

Both Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have indeed become integral parts of Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Indian cricket team. It’s a significant moment for Hardik to return to MI and lead the team in the IPL 2024 season, especially considering his journey with the franchise since the beginning of his IPL career.
