MLC 2023: Trent Boult And Dewald Brevis Power MI NY To The Final

Another 4-Fer from Man of the Match Trent Boult and batting heroics from an in-form Dewald Brevis and Tim David helped the MI New York to qualify for the Finals as they defeated the Texas Super Kings by 6 wickets in the Challengers Match. Trent Boult showed good control over his line & length.

Earlier Opting to bowl first Trent Boult as usual started well in the powerplay as he took the wickets of Faf du Plessis and Mitchell Santner. With the help of some vital contributions from Devon Conway, Milind Kumar, and David Miller the TSK scored a respectable total of 158 in their 20 overs.

Chasing a Good score of 159 the MI NY had a good start to the innings thanks to Shayan Jahangir. MI NY had full control of the chase and the partnership between Dewald Brevis and Tim David ensured that MI NY reached the Finals Comfortably as they chased down the target quite comprehensively in 19 overs and 6 wickets to spare.

Earlier in the game, MI NY won the toss and chose to bowl first. It proved to be a wise decision as Trent Boult, the fiery pacer, struck early, removing the formidable TSK captain Faf du Plessis 6(9) and Mitchell Santner 6(3), causing a setback to the opposition. The TSK powerplay score stood at 40/3 after the departure of Cody Chetty 14(13).

CONWAY-MILIND BOSS THE MIDDLE OVERS

Devon Conway and Milind Kumar stepped up in the middle overs, displaying an impressive show of skill and power-hitting. Both batsmen took calculated risks, scoring boundaries at regular intervals, and built a crucial partnership of 77 runs in just 10 overs, bolstering TSK’s total.

However, MI NY’s bowlers regained control in the death overs, preventing the TSK batsmen from capitalizing on the earlier momentum. Rashid Khan and Trent Boult, in particular, were instrumental in breaking the partnership by dismissing Milind and Conway, respectively.

This triggered a collapse for TSK, with Boult claiming four wickets in total, including that of Calvin Savage. Nevertheless, David Miller’s last-over heroics pushed TSK’s total past the 150-mark, setting a challenging target for MI NY.

DECENT START TO THE CHASE FOR MI NY

During the chase, MI NY faced an early setback with the loss of Slade van Staden. However, the star of the powerplay for MI NY, Shayan Jahangir, took control of the situation, launching an aggressive assault on TSK’s bowler Gerald Coetzee.

Shayan’s blistering innings of 36 off just 18 deliveries, featuring 5 fours and 2 sixes, set the tone for the rest of the chase, with MI NY finishing the power play at 45/2.

The onus was then on MI NY’s middle-order batsmen to convert the promising start into a successful chase. They rose to the occasion brilliantly, with Nicholas Pooran contributing 23 runs before being dismissed while trying to accelerate the scoring rate.

The partnership between Dewald Brevis and Tim David proved to be the turning point of the match. Initially, the duo played cautiously, taking singles and doubles to settle in. Once set, they unleashed their attacking prowess, taking on TSK’s spinners Mitchell Santner and Mohammad Mohsin to shift the momentum in MI NY’s favor.

Tim David’s scintillating innings of 33 runs off just 20 deliveries, including four maximums, proved crucial in building the platform for MI NY’s victory. The partnership of 50 runs in 31 deliveries between Brevis and David ensured MI NY’s dominance over TSK and sealed the victory in style, with Dewald Brevis and David Weise calmly finishing the chase in the 19th over.
