MI vs DC: Suryakumar Yadav’s Barnstorming Knock Rips Apart DC

There was carnage at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, when Suryakumar Yadav was at the crease. Suryakumar Yadav played astonishingly both anchor & aggressor roles in his unbeaten knock of 73 runs in 45 balls and struck 7 fours and 4 monster sixes. MI’s dashing batter gave impetus to set a target of 181 runs, which proved too much for DC as MI won the game comprehensively by 59 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav had come into bat when score was 48-2 in 5.3 overs. Kuldeep Yadav & Vipraj Nigam started bowling in tandem. The ball was drifting and Ryan Rickelton was foxed by Kuldeep in 7th over when MI was in a spot of bother at 58-3 in 6.4 overs. Tilak Varma & Suryakumar Yadav had an uphill task ahead of them.

Suryakumar Yadav showed remarkable patience against spinners as he played grounded sweep shots brilliantly. Suryakumar along with Tilak Varma, played out Kuldeep & Vipraj’s overs, which turned out to be a key element in the match. Vipraj Nigam was economical with 25 runs conceded in 4 overs, so was Kuldeep Yadav, who conceded 22 runs in 4 overs and taking 1 wicket. Suryakumar & Tilak were involved in a not so ideal partnership in terms of modern-day T20 cricket (55 runs in 49 balls) but they played the waiting game.

Suryakumar Yadav’s onslaught

Suryakumar Yadav seized the opportunity in the 19th over. MI’s score at 18 overs was 132-5, and Hardik Pandya was dismissed cheaply for 3 runs in 6 balls, where the onus was on Suryakumar Yadav. Mukesh Kumar, who is often known for nailing perfect yorkers, missed his line & length quite badly. Suryakumar was deep into the crease and played lofted cover shots and Naman Dhir smacked 2 fours and 2 sxes on bowling of Mukesh who gave away mind mind-boggling 27 runs.

Dushmantha Chameera overstepped, and Suryakumar played a baseball kind of short to deep midwicket in stands. MI’s stylish batter had occupied the crease so well that he was able to read wickets and variations of bowlers astutely. Suryakumar Yadav’s bat-swing was eye-catchy as the off-cutters and pace off deliveries were dispatched to boundary.

The last two overs yielded 48 runs which changed the complexion of the match completely. Suryakumar Yadav showed a glimpse of his batting style which hurt DC a lot. Apart from Suryakumar Yadav, not a single batter scored 30 odd runs. We should not forget the run a ball knock of Tilak Varma of 27 runs as he along with Suryakumar frustrated DC’s bowlers and later it paid the dividends for MI

Suryakumar Yadav’s belligerent knock perhaps is a dangerous sign for teams. MI’s dashing batter now has 583 runs in 13 innings with a stunning average of 72.88 and a whooping strike rate of 170.47.  MI now have qualified for playoffs but their next opponent is Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the match is on 26th May, currently they have 16 points but they are at 4th place as making it to top 2 is in not their hands as already GT have 18, RCB & PBKS 17 points to their name and all these 3 teams have 2 matches remaining; which can make MI more lethal and produce gem of knocks and spells going ahead in their last match & playoffs, who knows?
