Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently discussed the BCCI’s decision to terminate the contracts of star players such as Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. The decision was reportedly made because the players did not participate in Ranji Trophy matches despite being free from national team duties.

During the announcement of the contracted players for the 2023-24 season, the BCCI disclosed that Kishan and Iyer were not included in the list this time. The board’s statement emphasized the importance of players participating in domestic tournaments when not representing the national team.

Hoping they bounce back and come back stronger- Irfan Pathan’s message to Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer

On his social media handle X, Irfan Pathan noted the BCCI’s decision regarding Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer’s contracts, offering his best wishes to the players and expressing hope that they would bounce back stronger. Pathan also advocated for the BCCI to formulate strategies that ensure fair treatment for players like Hardik Pandya, who primarily focus on white-ball cricket. Pathan wrote,

“They are talented cricketers, both Shreyas and Ishan. Hoping they bounce back and come back stronger. If players like Hardik don’t want to play red ball cricket, should he and others like him participate in white-ball domestic cricket when they aren’t on national duty? If this doesn’t apply to all, then Indian cricket won’t achieve the desired results!,”

Ishan Kishan left from India’s tour of South Africa stating mental fatigue but was allegedly training with the pandya brothers in Baroda. Shreyas Iyer meanwhile was part of the India squad for the first two tests but was dropped for the final 3 games. He reportedly skipped Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy clash stating back issues but the NCA rejected those claims.

We don’t think you are serious, so your names have been removed- Aakash Chopra on BCCI’s Decision

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, former India opener Aakash Chopra shared his perspective on the contract termination of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer by the BCCI. Chopra expressed that the players faced consequences for not following the BCCI’s instructions to participate in domestic cricket. He said,

“It has been communicated by both Jay Shah and Rohit Sharma that you need to play domestic cricket and that if you are not serious about it, there will be consequences. No one directly says what the consequences are, but these are the first signals about BCCI stating, ‘we don’t think you are serious, so your names have been removed,”

The Former cricketer added,

“Let’s be fair – Shreyas Iyer had scored 500 runs in the World Cup. His name not being there indicates that it’s a disciplinary rap on the knuckles. Don’t quote me on this, but it seems like that. The same thing can be said about Ishan Kishan,”

Iyer was one of the leading run getters of the tournamanet during India’s run to the final at the ODI World Cup 2023. Meanwhile, Kishan played a crucial knock against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 but has warmed the bench with KL Rahul returning from Injury.
