MI star batter Suryakumar Yadav has been declared fit ahead of their IPL 2024 match against DC. Suryakumar Yadav had earlier suffered an ankle injury during the South Africa tour in December 2023. Suryakumar Yadav has linked up with Mumbai Indians in what is sure to come as a boost to Hardik Pandya’s misfiring team at IPL 2024.

Suryakumar Yadav, one of the pillars of the Mumbai side over the years, has not featured in IPL 2024 so far as he was at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy recovering from the ankle surgery he had earlier this year. It is still unknown if he will be fit for Mumbai’s next match, against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium, though he did bat in the nets and train with the others on Friday.

Suryakumar Yadav last played a competitive match in December, scoring a 56-ball 100 in the third T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg. He picked up the ankle injury during that match. Apart from the ankle surgery, he also underwent surgery for a sports hernia in this period. As a result, he was ruled out of India’s three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at home, their last T20I assignment before the World Cup in June.

Star Mumbai batter Suryakumar Yadav has been deemed fit and is expected to play in MI’s next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against DC on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium. On Wednesday, the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru cleared the middle-order batsman, who had been out of action for more than three months. The BCCI and the NCA physios didn’t want to take any chances and made sure they were completely pleased before giving  Suryakumar Yadav the go-light.

Suryakumar Yadav, who plays for Mumbai Indians, has been missing in action in the league and his team has lost all three of its matches so far. “Surya is making very good progress and very soon he will be back playing for MI. However, he might have to sit out for a few more games, having missed the first two,” a BCCI source said.

While MI is missing Suryakumar Yadav, the BCCI doesn’t want to take any chances with the big-hitters fitness as he is expected to play a huge role in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June.

Suryakumar Yadav had earlier suffered an ankle injury during the South Africa tour in December 2023. The injury has sidelined him from international cricket in early 2024, and Suryakumar recently revealed that it was in fact his sports hernia affliction that was still keeping him out of action. Suryakumar underwent surgery for the latter in Munich, Germany on January 17. Indian and DC spinner Kuldeep Yadav has welcomed Suryakumar Yadav back to playing cricket and has been open about it.

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner Kuldeep Yadav recently welcomed Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Suryakumar Yadav back into the action after his injury-forced hiatus with an Instagram story. Suryakumar Yadav has been on the sidelines ever since the start of this year, after suffering an injury during a South Africa tour last December. He then also underwent groin surgery and did his rehabilitation at the NCA over the past couple of weeks.

Suryakumar Yadav recently got medical clearance to return to the field from the NCA. The world’s number one T20I batter didn’t waste much time and joined MI’s camp in Mumbai to prepare for their upcoming match in IPL 2024. They will face Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 7.

The DC players have already reached Mumbai to prepare for the match. Kuldeep Yadav, who is with the Capitals contingent, met Suryakumar Yadav at a recent practice session. The leg-spinner took to his official Instagram handle and shared a collage of photos of the duo with a welcome message to Surya. Kuldeep wrote:

“Good to see you back dada.”

Kuldeep Yadav also caught up with a couple of other MI players at the Wankhede Stadium. The Delhi franchise gave a glimpse of it by sharing a video on their official X handle.

Suryakumar Yadav’s absence has hurt the MI side dearly as they have lost all their three matches in IPL 2024 and are currently at the bottom of the points table. They are also the only team this season to not win a game so far. Surya’s comeback ahead of their next game against DC will provide a confidence boost to the Hardik Pandya-led side.

“For BCCI, the main concern is if he is on course for World T20 which he is. Obviously he will play for MI but after a sports hernia surgery, he can’t be rushed,” the source said. The 33-year-old often draws comparisons with retired South African superstar A B de Villiers for his range of shots.

He has a superb strike rate of 171.55 in the format. Suryakumar Yadav has appeared in 60 T20 Internationals for India and has 2141 runs, including four hundreds. MI will take on DC in their fourth game, the first at home in Mumbai, on Monday.
