Michael Clarke suggests that the dynamic between Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma might not be as dire as it appears to the public. It came as no shock when the Mumbai Indians became the inaugural team to be formally ousted from contention in the IPL 2024 Playoffs. Despite naming Hardik Pandya as their new captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, the campaign of the five-time champions failed to gain momentum.

Enduring numerous defeats early in the tournament, MI’s sluggish start hindered any chances of recovery. Criticism targeted their captain, the team management faced backlash, and ultimately, the downfall ensued for one of the most successful IPL franchises. The primary blame was directed towards Hardik, amidst rumors of discord with Rohit Sharma and their strained relationship.

Rohit Sharma wants to win World Cup- Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke, the former Australia captain, holds the belief that the tension between Hardik and Rohit might not be as severe as it appears to the public. Clarke’s perspective is influenced by Hardik’s inclusion in India’s T20I World Cup squad, emphasizing Rohit’s influence and authority in team selection. While acknowledging that there may still be underlying issues between the two Indian stars, Clarke asserts that Rohit wouldn’t have chosen Hardik if the situation had escalated beyond control.

“You know what… knowing Rohit Sharma, he will wrap his arms around Hardik Pandya. That shows the character that Rohit is. He is the Indian captain and trust me… he wants to win that World Cup. He has had a lot of say in the 15 that is picked by India,” Michael Clarke said on Around the Wicket podcast.

“It’s very different to let’s say the Australian 15. They are heavily focused on spin bowling. If the beef between Rohit and Hardik was as strong as people think, Hardik wouldn’t be in that World Cup campaign. The Indian captain has that much power,” he added.

Michael Clarke’s Insight: Mumbai Indians’ Divided Camp and Hardik Pandya’s potential redemption in T20 World Cup

Michael Clarke, among others, hinted at a split within the Mumbai Indians camp, suggesting a divide between players supporting Hardik and those favoring Rohit. Despite this, he acknowledges Hardik’s quality and contributions. While acknowledging Hardik’s current form struggles, Clarke recognizes his potential when playing for India, separate from his role as captain. Hardik’s truncated 2023 ODI World Cup due to injury adds to his motivation to excel as India kicks off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5.

“I think while there is obviously issues with how Rohit was released off his duties as captain of Mumbai Indians, I don’t think that will affect their friendship, selection or Rohit Sharma. He will make sure Hardik is as focused as possible,” said Michael Clarke.

“You’ve seen in the last couple of games and Hardik knows he has to be batting and bowling and has to improve his game from where it’s been in the first half of the IPL. Right now it’s based on performance and as long as Hardik is performing, Rohit knows how important he is for that Indian team,” he added.
